Advanced artificial intelligence (AI), including natural language processing (NLP), extracts key clinical concepts from free-text notes, such as physician notes, imaging reports, and pathology narratives, transforming them into standardized variables suitable for large-scale observational research. Results. Truveta Data comprise over 130 million de-identified patient records that are updated daily and represent diverse geographic regions, care settings, and patient populations in the US. The data have supported over 100 scientific publications to date; additionally, they support health system participants' own research interests and patient care insights. Published studies have addressed treatment effectiveness, post-market device surveillance, COVID-19 vaccine safety, and health equity. Discussion. Truveta addresses critical barriers that have hindered the realization of a learning health system. Unlike prior RWD initiatives limited by scope, latency, and vendor dependence, Truveta enables near-real-time, population-scale research grounded in rich clinical data. Truveta has published research in JCO Clinical Cancer Informatics showing how large language models can extract cancer staging information from unstructured clinical notes with high precision and at scale. The study focused on Truveta Language Model for Oncology (TLM-Oncology), an AI model designed to unlock critical oncology data from clinical documentation. The model analysed over 2 million clinical notes and extracted more than 2.7 million staging records representing over 217,000 patients across bladder, breast, cervical, colorectal, and prostate cancers. Cancer staging information is often captured in free-text physician notes and pathology reports rather than structured electronic health record fields, making it difficult to access for research purposes. The research demonstrates how AI can transform complex clinical documentation into research-ready data by combining clinical expertise with advanced language models and scalable engineering infrastructure.
Truveta and Knit Health have announced a collaboration to develop next-generation healthcare AI by combining Truveta's real-world clinical dataset with Knit's advanced behavioural AI models. The partnership will integrate Truveta Data, which includes de-identified electronic health records for over 130 million patients, with Knit's Large Clinical Behavior Model. Knit's platform learns from real clinical decision-making to create dynamic care pathways that predict optimal patient journeys and actions based on real-world constraints. The collaboration will focus on specialist referral optimisation, predictive patient flow management and care pathway enhancement.
