Wegmans wants to add new building at Harrison supermarket site

Wegmans wants to add new building at Harrison supermarket site. The supermarket chain Wegmans is seeking to add a new building to the 20.35-acre site of its existing 121,000-square-feet store at 106 Corporate Park Drive in Harrison. Wegmans also is seeking to create a new connection of its property with Manhattanville Road, which would allow another way to access the Wegmans site in addition to the current connection via Westchester Avenue. The new building would be 20,000 square feet in size and would replace an existing 11,000-square-feet structure that had been used as a child day care center. The existing day care building would be demolished. The parking area near the proposed building would be redesigned and increased from 44 spaces to 71 spaces. This would result in a net increase of 27 spaces in the immediate area of the new building and increase the total number of parking spaces provided at the Wegmans site from 776 to 803. Also proposed is a loading area for the new building. Attorney Anthony B. Gioffre III of the White Plains-based law firm Cuddy & Feder told the Harrison Planning Board that the new building would be for retail and could be the location of a wine store. Gioffre pointed out that a traffic study found that the Wegmans store is generating less traffic than was projected during the review that was conducted before the original approval was given to build the store. He said that even with the new retail building traffic still would be 11% lower during the afternoon peak hour and 15% lower during the Saturday peak hour compared with projections made for the initial site plan that was approved. Gioffre said that there is ample parking on the site to accommodate the needs of the proposed additional retail building. "The proposed driveway reconfiguration and opening (with Manhattanville Road) will also benefit the surrounding roadway network by providing improved access to and from I-684 and the Hutchinson River Parkway," Gioffre said. "The reconfigured access will provide a faster, more direct connection for the local emergency responders." Wegmans proposes repaving the portion of Manhattanville Road between its site and the I-684 right-of-way, constructing new roadway improvements within the Manhattanville Road right-of-way such as replacement curbs, plantings and safety measures, and repairing two non-functioning streetlights along Manhattanville Road. "Overall, the proposed site improvements are expected to result in a net benefit to the site and the community by improving access to the site and offering complementary commercial space supporting the successful Wegmans facility," Gioffre said. Zach Bell, store manager of Wegmans in Harrison said, "For the past five years we've been open a constant request I get from our customers is 'will we ever have an entrance on Manhattanville Road and will there ever be another retail space taking over that day care?' This is something we've been working on, something we're really excited for. If it's a wine store it obviously complements our business perfectly. People come in the store asking if we sell wine and I tell them, 'not in New York but in other states we are able to do that; it is a big part of our company.'" Kim Goergen, project manager with Wegmans said, "Now that the day care is closed... this is the right time to pursue this application."

'A lot of people that go without': Buffalo City Mission to deliver 5,500 Thanksgiving meals to families

'A lot of people that go without': Buffalo City Mission to deliver 5,500 Thanksgiving meals to families. Buffalo City Mission is leading the charge with its annual Turkey Express program, partnering with Wegmans Food Markets to deliver thousands of holiday meals to families across Western New York. BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) - The spirit of giving is alive and well in Buffalo as dozens of local organizations and volunteers work to ensure no one goes hungry this Thanksgiving. Buffalo City Mission is leading the charge with its annual Turkey Express program, partnering with Wegmans Food Markets to deliver thousands of holiday meals to families across Western New York. This year, the need is higher than ever, prompting the organization to increase its meal count by 500 to reach 5,500 total deliveries. On Tuesday night, volunteers spent hours prepping hundreds of rolls and canned cranberry sauce. Wednesday brings one of the biggest tasks of the event: portioning pies for distribution. "For tomorrow, we will be portioning the pies that we'll be sending out. That is a very large project, so we need to have a couple more hours to prep for that tomorrow," said Amanda Wolanske, donor engagement officer at Buffalo City Mission. The increased demand reflects the challenging times many families are facing. Buffalo City Mission recognized this growing need and responded accordingly. "In response to the increased need we're seeing, we felt that we needed to add more meals so we are doing 500 more meals than we did in prior years," Wolanske said. For many recipients, these deliveries may be their only holiday visit. The meals reach families, seniors and individuals throughout the region who might otherwise go without a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. "There's a lot of people in need for Thanksgiving and I like knowing that I'm with a company that likes to help the community," said Brenda Hidalgo, a volunteer through Wegmans. Eastern Hills Church members joined Wegmans employees in volunteering for the cause. Wegmans is providing meal components and funding to help Buffalo City Mission source products for Thanksgiving morning. "We're providing components of the meal as well as being able to provide some funding so that the City Mission is able to source the product for Thanksgiving morning," said Michele Mehaffy, community and public relations manager at Wegmans. The grocery chain wanted to do even more this year, given the widespread challenges families are facing. "This year it's been very, very challenging for so many, and I know that the City Mission has stepped up and really taken that on and wanted to help the community more, so we just wanted to be right alongside with them," Mehaffy said. For the Buffalo City Mission team, the effort extends beyond simply packing boxes. It's about ensuring everyone can participate in the Thanksgiving tradition. "There's a lot of people that go without on Thanksgiving, and we just want to make sure everybody has a chance to have a nice meal and participate in the Thanksgiving and share in the spirit of it," Wolanske said. The volunteer experience holds deep personal meaning for those involved. For Hidalgo, it connects to cherished family memories. "Thanksgiving means a lot to me. It was very big in my family. My mother loved having the family surrounded in a big table and making a lot of food and feeding us and making sure that we're enjoying each other," Hidalgo said. The collaborative spirit extends to the workplace culture at Wegmans as well. "We work together, we all get along, we're like a family. Wegmans is like a family, so doing this is a big thing for us," Hidalgo said. Those looking to give back this holiday season can find volunteer opportunities through Buffalo City Mission's website.
