Requirements
  • A minimum of 3+ years of high-performing experience as a Research Integrity Adviser or in an equivalent role.
  • Knowledge or experience of the academic publishing industry and scholarly publication processes, systems, and tools, including software for plagiarism and image-manipulation detection.
  • Familiarity with publication ethics and research integrity issues.
  • Familiarity with plagiarism software such as CrossCheck and iThenticate, and other research integrity tools.
  • Familiarity with copyright law.
  • High computer literacy, including knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Office applications and Google Workspace.
  • Strong organizational, prioritization, analytical, and time-management skills, with close attention to detail.
  • A positive and proactive approach to problem-solving and task management.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and English language skills.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Graduate-level education in STEM or HSS.
Responsibilities
  • Rapidly triage and evaluate research integrity and publication ethics cases across journals, books, and other Springer Nature products, including cases handled by third-party partners, assessing potential legal and reputational risks for stakeholders.
  • Oversee and quality-check complex and sensitive research integrity cases managed by partners, and directly investigate cases when required using investigative tools.
  • Use in-house and external investigative tools to assess and validate research integrity concerns, ensuring partner outputs meet standards of accuracy, completeness, and consistency.
  • Evaluate whether concerns undermine the reliability of the published record and review recommended editorial actions, serving as the primary approver for key milestones including retractions.
  • Ensure partner casework aligns with Springer Nature policies, Committee on Publication Ethics guidelines, and internal Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Act as the primary escalation point for complex, high-risk, or time-sensitive cases, coordinating with the Research Integrity Partner Manager and wider teams.
  • Lead regular operational reviews with partners to discuss case trends, provide feedback, align expectations, and improve quality and turnaround times.
  • Provide best-practice advice, structured feedback, and action plans to in-house staff, external editors, and partner teams.
  • Communicate complex ethics concepts clearly and concisely through written and verbal channels, including phone and video calls.
  • Quality-check and sign off key milestones in partner-handled cases, including editorial recommendations and draft retraction notices.
  • Manage and resolve conflicts between stakeholders professionally while maintaining constructive working relationships.
  • Maintain an up-to-date understanding of the publication ethics landscape, identify emerging risks, and contribute to policy development and workflow enhancements.
  • Ensure all work complies with Springer Nature policies, Committee on Publication Ethics guidance, and industry best practices.

Springer Nature, African academies launch research integrity survey. 20 August 2026 Springer Nature has joined forces with the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) and the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) to launch a major new research integrity survey. The study represents the first continent-wide investigation into how African researchers experience research integrity training and institutional support. The primary goal of the initiative is to ensure that African perspectives actively shape global research standards. Consequently, the survey will evaluate the delivery, structure, and relevance of current integrity education across different stages of an academic career. Addressing global evidence gaps. Maintaining research integrity is fundamental to building public trust in science and informing policy decisions. However, comprehensive data regarding integrity training in developing research ecosystems remains limited. The new partnership combines Springer Nature's publishing expertise with the regional leadership and networks of AAS and ASSAf. By gathering direct feedback, the partners aim to build a clearer picture of regional needs. Furthermore, the findings will help identify where support is succeeding and where structural gaps persist. Gathering regional perspectives on scientific standards. Susan Veldsman, Scholarly Publishing Programme Manager at ASSAf, emphasised the importance of giving local researchers a direct voice. She said: "Research integrity is fundamental to maintaining confidence in science and evidence-informed decision making. We welcome the opportunity to partner with Springer Nature and the African Academy of Sciences on this important survey, which gives South African researchers an opportunity to share their experiences directly. Researchers across Africa bring unique perspectives that are essential to understanding how research integrity is supported globally. By reflecting researchers' voices in the evidence base, the survey will help identify what support is working well, where gaps remain and what is needed at different stages of a research career. That evidence will be valuable for South Africa and can help inform training and guidance that reflects researchers' real experiences, while contributing to a stronger culture of integrity across the research ecosystem." Vuyo Mliswa, Academic Affairs Manager at Springer Nature, highlighted that African research makes a significant contribution to international science. He said: "Research across Africa makes a significant contribution to global science, yet researchers' experiences of research integrity training and support remain underrepresented in the evidence base. We're delighted to be partnering with the African Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Science South Africa, whose leadership and networks are critical to ensuring that African researchers are represented in this work." Expanding an international research programme. The survey forms part of a wider series of international studies conducted by Springer Nature. Previous iterations have surveyed researchers across Australia, Brazil, China, India, Japan, the UK, and the US. Findings from a recent white paper analysing the previous seven surveys revealed widespread disparities in global training provision. Despite these variations, researcher demand for integrity education was consistently high. Between 84 and 94 per cent of respondents supported mandatory training during their careers. Interestingly, authorship guidance emerged as the single highest non-data training priority across every surveyed country. Strengthening African research capacity and independence. The survey aligns closely with ongoing efforts to strengthen research leadership and autonomy across the African continent. The project also complements discussions within the African Research Advisory Council. Responses to the survey will remain strictly anonymous, with aggregate data distributed to universities, research funders, and policymakers upon completion. Ultimately, the partners hope the evidence will inform future policy development and help build sustainable research capacity.

August 12, 2026 Springer Nature and OpenEvidence today announced a subscription agreement that brings peer-reviewed content from Springer Nature into OpenEvidence, where physicians can retrieve and cite it during patient care. This agreement takes effect August 5 and forms part of Springer Nature's community led ARC3 framework. Clinicians and healthcare professionals need quick and easy access to the very latest trusted insights to help inform their decisions. Today's announcement ensures they will have access to trusted scientific and medical content published by Springer Nature at the point of care, in the AI platform they already use. Frank Vranken Peeters, Chief Executive Officer at Springer Nature, said: "Springer Nature and OpenEvidence share a common goal - to achieve maximum exposure for scientific research, while ensuring authors receive clear attribution and that their work is connected back to its original source. Springer Nature launches Nature Books imprint. 16 July 2026 Springer Nature has launched Nature Books, a new imprint designed to give authors the opportunity to publish long-form work under the famous brand for the first time. The publisher says the new imprint combines the subject expertise of in-house Nature Portfolio editors with Springer Nature's established academic books programme, creating a publishing model intended to help authors develop, strengthen and broaden the reach of their work. According to the publisher, Nature Books will focus on publishing titles aimed at academics, policymakers and funders, bringing together expertise, evidence and insight on some of the most significant challenges facing research and society. Harsh Jegadeesan, Chief Publishing Officer, Springer Nature commented: "Books are an important part of the research ecosystem because they allow authors to explore complex questions with a depth and context that other formats cannot always provide. As the world's largest academic book publisher, Research Information is committed to offering publishing options that support author choice and help maximise the reach and impact of their work. "Nature Books is a clear example of that commitment. Bringing together two of Springer Nature's greatest strengths: our global leaderships in academic books and the subject expertise of Nature Portfolio, it gives authors a powerful new way to develop and share long-form work."
