Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in construction management, accounting, or a related field from an accredited college or university and five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Proficiency in estimating software such as Timberline, UScost, or WinEst.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business documents, technical procedures, and government regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedures.
  • Ability to present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to apply probability and statistical inference concepts.
  • Ability to apply fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to calculate area and volume.
  • Ability to interface with clients and co-workers.
  • Ability to define problems, collect information, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule-based instructions.
  • Ability to factor safety and Occupational Safety and Health Administration requirements into estimates.
Responsibilities
  • Identify and quantify construction elements.
  • Enter quantities into the appropriate software program for pricing.
  • Provide initial data for entry into Commence software.
  • Provide the Contracts Department with applicable specification documents to identify insurance requirements.
  • Send new contracts for Corporate review.
  • Identify, contact, and build relationships with vendors and suppliers to assess their capabilities for specific projects.
  • Analyze and scope vendors and suppliers to determine best value and project continuity.
  • Persuade vendors and suppliers to commit to best pricing based on analysis.
  • Assemble quantities in pricing format to reflect bid form requirements.
  • Create baseline job duration and determine special equipment requirements for specific jobs.
  • Apply best-value vendors and subcontractors to estimates.
  • Identify the bidding party and prepare bid forms, bid proposal letters, and qualifications.
  • Research construction history for techniques related to job elements, productivity, value enhancement, value engineering, and alternative constructability.
  • Ensure Standard Conditions are included in every proposal.
  • Include proposal language allowing reductions of 50% when a job is 50% complete and seek language allowing final retentions 60 days after completion of Baker work.
  • Package and send proposals on time and review them with Operations for productivity and manpower.
  • Follow up personally with clients to confirm bid receipt and identify obstacles to closing the deal.
  • Develop client relationships for current and future jobs.
  • Collect data on lost jobs to monitor competition and the market.
  • Provide information to Marketing for Commence updates after bidding.
  • Track projects until awarded.
  • Contact the Chief Estimator or Estimating Manager when an award is made.
  • Set up transition meetings for the Project Manager.
  • Copy pricing, quotes, and pertinent proposal information for the Project Manager.
  • Prepare rough schedules for job duration, cash flow, and man-hour requirements.
  • Schedule meetings for the Project Manager and invitees.
  • Convey information about low-qualified vendors and subcontractors and commitments to subcontractors and general contractors.
  • Provide an overview of the job and proposal to the Project Manager and operations support.
  • Communicate the general contractor's or owner's schedule and needs to field supervision.
  • Review potential operations alternatives.
  • Price changes within the necessary timeframe.
  • Assist the project team in receiving approval within 60 days of submittals.
