Requirements
  • A current license meeting applicable state, Commonwealth, or customer-specific requirements is required.
  • One or more of the following licensure credentials is required with the necessary degree: Certified Employee Assistance Professional, Licensed Master Social Worker, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Social Worker, Licensed Professional Counselor, or Registered Nurse with state and/or compact-state licensure.
  • At least two years of experience after earning the degree in a healthcare, behavioral health, psychiatric, or substance abuse healthcare setting is required.
  • An Associate degree in Nursing, Bachelor's degree in Social Work, or Master's degree in Social Work is required.
  • Knowledge of utilization management procedures, mental health and substance abuse community resources, and providers is required.
  • Experience and knowledge in inpatient and/or outpatient settings is required.
  • Knowledge of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, or the most current diagnostic edition is required.
  • The ability to analyze utilization problems and plan and implement solutions that directly influence quality of care is required.
  • Strong organization, time management, and communication skills are required.
Responsibilities
  • Authorize and review utilization of mental health and substance abuse services provided in inpatient and/or outpatient care settings.
  • Collect and analyze utilization data.
  • Assist with discharge planning and care coordination.
  • Provide member assistance for mental health and substance abuse issues.
  • Participate in special quality improvement projects.
  • Monitor inpatient and/or outpatient levels of care related to mental health and substance abuse treatment to ensure medical necessity and effectiveness.
  • Provide telephone triage, crisis intervention, and emergency authorizations as assigned.
  • Perform concurrent reviews for inpatient and/or outpatient care and other levels of care allowed by scope of practice and experience.
  • Develop discharge plans with providers and facilities and oversee their implementation.
  • Perform quality clinical reviews while educating members and making appropriate interventions to advance member care.
  • Provide members and providers with information about mental health and substance abuse benefits, community treatment resources, mental health managed care programs, company policies and procedures, and applicable criteria.
  • Interact with Physician Advisors regarding clinical and authorization questions and concerns for specific cases.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities, including data collection, tracking, and analysis.
  • Maintain an active workload in accordance with National Care Manager performance standards.
  • Work with community agencies as appropriate.
  • Propose alternative treatment plans when service requests do not meet medical necessity criteria.
  • Participate in network development, including identifying and recruiting quality providers as needed.
  • Advocate for patients to ensure treatment needs are met.
  • Interact professionally and respectfully with providers to facilitate the treatment process.
