Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in medical dosimetry or an equivalent degree and graduation from a Medical Dosimetry JRCERT-accredited program of at least 12 months is required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Candidates must hold Certified Medical Dosimetrist certification or be eligible to sit for the Medical Dosimetry Certification Board examination and pass the examination upon hire.
Responsibilities
  • Translate prescribed radiation doses used in cancer treatment into precise, safe, and accurate treatment plans.
  • Collaborate with medical physicists and radiation oncologists to conceive and optimize treatment plans and consult with radiation therapists during treatment execution.
  • Design treatment plans using computer and manual computation with optimal beam geometry to deliver prescribed radiation doses while sparing critical structures.
  • Identify and contour normal and dose-limiting structures using images from one or more data sets.
  • Perform image registration with computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and positron emission tomography data sets.
  • Discuss treatment-plan design with radiation oncologists and medical physicists.
  • Calculate accurate delivery of prescribed radiation doses, document pertinent information in patient records, and verify mathematical accuracy using a system established by the medical physicist.
  • Assist with simulations and tumor localization using specified imaging devices, including computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and positron emission tomography.
  • Supervise, perform, or assist with planning and implementing compensation filters, custom shields, bolus, electron cutouts, and other beam-modifying devices.
  • Perform and assist with planning and implementing molds, casts, and other immobilization devices.
  • Import patient image studies and localization markers for treatment planning as specified by the radiation oncologist.
  • Create and transfer reference images and localization markers for portal verification and treatment delivery, including digitally reconstructed radiographs, cone-beam computed tomography, and other image-guided radiation therapy methods.
  • Advise radiation therapists on implementing treatment plans, including the correct use of immobilization devices, bolus, compensators, wedges, field arrangements, and other treatment or imaging parameters.
  • Teach applied medical dosimetry to students, radiation therapists, and residents.
  • Participate in clinical research to develop and implement new techniques.
  • Participate in quality improvement processes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
