The number comes from the companies' own contract announcement. Maritime Launch Services is due US$3.75 million each quarter, except during a 30-month fee-free period beginning after the first year. Across a full 10-year term, that leaves 30 paid quarters: US$112.5 million. The agreement also carries cost-plus charges for individual launches. Isar says operations could begin in 2028 and rise to as many as 40 launches a year by 2029, a cadence that would put the unproven German vehicle among the busiest orbital rockets in the world. For now, the contrast is stark. A launch site is planned for dozens of annual flights by a rocket whose only attempt ended in the sea. The agreement is large, conditional and more complicated than a lease. The companies describe the deal as a 10-year facilities usage agreement, not simply a lease. It gives Isar a dedicated complex at Spaceport Nova Scotia near Canso, with access to a pad, assembly and testing facilities, a launch operations centre and payload-integration infrastructure. Isar can seek two further five-year terms. The separate per-launch charges mean the final value could exceed the US$112.5 million fixed schedule, but the published terms do not support describing the initial agreement itself as a flat US$150 million commitment. The contract is also not unconditional. According to the Maritime Launch Services disclosure, the parties still have to agree on a statement of work and milestones, hand over the designated pad and complete additional infrastructure by the end of 2027. That timing explains the payment holiday. The 30-month waiver covers much of the period in which the site is meant to move from construction into launch operations, before the regular quarterly fees begin. The 40-flight figure is a statement of potential capacity, not a booked manifest. It depends on the spaceport being finished, Spectrum becoming operational, production expanding and enough customers appearing to fill the schedule. Spectrum's first flight lasted about 30 seconds. Spectrum lifted off from Andøya Spaceport in Norway on March 30, 2025. About 30 seconds later, the flight-termination system ended the mission and the rocket made an unpowered descent into the sea. Isar's investigation traced the failure to an unintended opening of a vent valve and a loss of attitude control at the start of a roll manoeuvre. The company said the safety system behaved as designed and that the vehicle never threatened the public. The second mission, called Onward and Upward, is intended as a qualification flight rather than a routine commercial service. Its payload consists of five CubeSats and one experiment. Getting that mission off the pad has taken repeated attempts. Isar's own mission log records a pressurisation-valve problem in January, a vessel entering the restricted sea area and a fuel-temperature issue in March, a suspected leak in a composite overwrapped pressure vessel in April, and off-nominal behaviour in fluid systems in June. None of those delays proves that Spectrum cannot work. They do show the distance between possessing a launch vehicle and operating one at an industrial rhythm. The rocket itself is a two-stage, expendable vehicle using liquid oxygen and propane. Isar lists nine Aquila engines on the first stage, one on the second, and advertised payload capacities of up to 1,000 kilograms to low Earth orbit or 700 kilograms to sun-synchronous orbit on its Spectrum specifications page. Nova Scotia offers a clear path over the Atlantic. Spaceport Nova Scotia sits on the Atlantic coast near Canso. Its practical advantage is not simply that it is far north, but that rockets can depart over open water toward polar and other high-inclination orbits without flying over densely populated territory. + EDITOR'S PICK Those trajectories matter for Earth-observation, climate, communications and reconnaissance spacecraft. Maritime Launch Services presents the site as a multi-user orbital spaceport serving civil, commercial and defence missions. The facility is Canada's first licensed commercial orbital launch site, but it has not yet sent a payload into orbit. The Isar announcement targets the first orbital launches from the complex in 2028. For Isar, Canada adds a second regulatory system, a second customer base and a second launch corridor to its Norwegian operation. That diversification only becomes useful once both the rocket and the ground infrastructure are ready at the same time. Europe is paying for more than launch capacity. Isar's language about sovereign access is not ornamental. European governments want additional ways to place civil and defence spacecraft in orbit without relying on a single foreign provider or one domestic rocket family. The European Space Agency's European Launcher Challenge is built around that goal. ESA shortlisted Isar, Rocket Factory Augsburg, MaiaSpace, PLD Space and Orbital Express Launch, which later withdrew, and says more than €900 million has been earmarked for the programme. That is not the same as an unconditional award to Isar and RFA. The programme requires selected providers to demonstrate an orbital launch by 2027, with later support tied to operational launches and capacity upgrades. SpaceX flew 165 Falcon 9 missions in 2025, supported by mature pads, reused boosters and years of accumulated flight experience. Spectrum is expendable, so every launch requires another complete vehicle. That leaves Isar facing the same production and cost pressure described in Space Daily's examination of the economics of reusable rockets. Forty launches from Nova Scotia in one year would mean roughly one flight every nine days. Achieving that from a new pad with a new rocket would require reliable manufacturing, rapid processing, range availability and a deep queue of payloads. The next proof is still in Norway. Isar says vehicles three through seven are already in production and that its new 40,000-square-metre factory near Munich is designed to support more than 30 rockets a year. Reaching the Canadian target while also serving Norway would require that system to expand further. The Nova Scotia timetable gives the company room. Construction is meant to proceed through 2027, with launches beginning in 2028 and the highest advertised cadence arriving no earlier than 2029. But the sequence cannot be reversed. Before a Canadian pad can host dozens of Spectrum flights, the rocket has to survive ascent, separate its stages and place a payload into orbit from Andøya. The next decisive scene is therefore not yet on Canada's Atlantic shore. It is on the Norwegian island of Andøya, where Spectrum must rise from the pad, pass the point at which its first flight rolled out of control, and keep burning beyond those first 30 seconds. Planet Labs Germany and Isar Aerospace have announced a strategic launch agreement for what will be Germany's first satellite-rocket mission using entirely German-built technology.
