DP World completes £13m logistics training hub at London Gateway.

DP World completes £13m logistics training hub at London Gateway. DP World and Thames Freeport have completed a £13 million training and innovation facility at London Gateway, designed to support workforce development across the port and logistics sector. The three-storey facility, known as The Hive, will provide more than 100 days of industrial and employability training each year, supporting approximately 1,125 trainees annually across Thames Freeport. Located within London Gateway's logistics park, the training hub will focus on advanced logistics skills, with facilities including crane driver simulators and provision for working-at-height training, as well as the use of virtual reality technology to support people interested in pursuing a career in maritime and logistics. The development also provides meeting and event spaces for businesses operating across London Gateway. It includes a 100-person auditorium, flexible meeting rooms and a double-height training area. Additional facilities include a gym, all-weather padel court and multi-use sports pitch. Alan Holland, chief executive officer of DP World London Gateway Logistics Park, said: "As the London Gateway Logistics Hub continues to grow, we want to ensure the infrastructure around it grows too. With The Hive now complete, we are creating a space where businesses can collaborate, employees can thrive and the local community can develop the skills needed to access new opportunities." According to DP World, London Gateway supports more than 10,000 jobs through direct employment and its contribution to the wider economy. Construction of The Hive began in October 2025. The facility was built using British steel and has achieved BREEAM 'Outstanding' certification and an EPC A+ rating. Training providers and other partners are expected to begin operating from the building in November 2026. SEATS has been appointed as the skills partner and will work with DP World, employers and regional organisations to deliver workforce development programmes. Caroline joined Akabo Media as editor of Logistics Manager in October 2025. She has more than a decade of experience working in digital and print publishing across multiple sectors, including energy, pharmaceuticals and mining. 14th October 2026 13th October 2026

Gulf conflict upsets networks - and fleet size - of biggest feeder operators.

Gulf conflict upsets networks - and fleet size - of biggest feeder operators. Photo: VesselFinder 14 October 2026 The US-Iran conflict and subsequent closure of the Hormuz Straits have upended the networks, and fleet deployment strategies, of the world's three largest common feeder operators - and seen AD Ports' Global Feeder Services significantly close the gap on the market leaders. According to new analysis from Alphaliner, the Middle East conflict, now in its eighth month, has forced the two largest operators, X-Press Feeders and DP Worldm to reduce their offered capacity as the closure of Gulf routes curtailed their networks. "X-Press Feeders remains the world's largest feeder operator by deployed capacity, although its fleet has contracted by 7.1% year on year, as per Alphaliner's survey on 21 September," the analyst writes this week. "Fallout from the Middle East conflict forced X-Press to make service cuts across the region, which is the main reason for the decline." As a result, X-Press Feeders' global capacity is now 182,776 teu, down 13,987 teu from September 2025, with its capacity serving the Middle East region down 34.2% - equivalent to 38,000 teu - which Alphaliner linked to service suspension in the wake of the conflict. To offset this, it has increased capacity in the intra-Europe trades by 7.4%, and intra-Americas by 17.7%, and has even taken the unusual step, for a feeder operator, of joining a deepsea Asia-Europe service, via the deployment of the 4,800 teu X-Press Odyssey on the China-Mediterranean CEX service, jointly run with China United Lines, Uniglory, and Global Feeder Services. Meanwhile, DP World's global capacity, largely made up of the Unifeeder fleet, fell 2.5% during the year, a "modest overall decline, also driven by the Middle East conflict", said Alphaliner. It added: "Its deployed capacity in the ME/ISC related trade fell by 7,500 teu, while its operated capacity in all other regions remained broadly stable year on year. "Most of the cuts came from Gulf-related loops," Alphaliner wrote, noting it had largely redeployed capacity to the Asia-India trade, as well as to a number of extra loaders serving the ME/ISC trade. However, Emirati compatriot Global Feeder Services (GFS), owned by AD Ports, in what appears to be a commercial strategy that closely resembles that of DP World, saw its capacity jump by 31%, and its fleet is now only a fraction behind that of its rival - just 2,800 teu smaller - after it doubled-down on serving the India-Middle East trade corridor. "The ME/ISC trade remains GFS's core market and accounted for the bulk of its growth, in contrast to X-Press Feeders and DP World, which both reduced their presence there," said Alphaliner, calculating that GFS's capacity on that trade grew 26.9% and now accounts for around 70% of its total fleet. "While its two main competitors scaled back in the region, GFS kept its network largely intact. The carrier replaced Gulf calls on existing loops with Red Sea ports, and extended its reach into neighbouring trades. "As a result, GFS has overtaken both rivals to become the largest of the three in the ME/ISC trade, ahead of X-Press Feeders (about 73,500 teu) and DP World (about 70,500 teu)," the analyst added.

Yantian Port lines up $566m Yangtze terminal investment.

Yantian Port lines up $566m Yangtze terminal investment. China's Shenzhen-listed Yantian Port is planning a RMB3.79bn ($566m) investment in a new terminal at Zhangjiagang on the Yangtze River, extending its port development activities further into China's inland shipping network. The project will be developed through wholly owned subsidiary Shenzhang Port (Jiangsu) Port Co at the Metallurgical Industrial Park operating area of Suzhou Port's Zhangjiagang complex. Yantian Port intends to develop the first phase into a river-sea transhipment hub combining cargo handling, warehousing, logistics services and multimodal transport connections. The investment will be financed through a combination of shareholder capital and borrowing. Around 40% of the project cost, equivalent to RMB1.52bn ($226m), will be provided through capital injections into the subsidiary. The remaining RMB2.27bn ($340m) is expected to be raised through bank loans and other financing arrangements. Shenzhang Port was established in March 2024 and has so far concentrated on preliminary approvals and project development rather than commercial operations. Yantian Port said it could also consider introducing strategic investors as the development progresses. The project forms part of the company's strategy to establish a stronger presence along the Yangtze and link its coastal port interests with inland cargo flows. Zhangjiagang is one of the principal cargo-handling centres in Jiangsu province, serving the manufacturing and industrial markets of the Yangtze River Delta. The investment would give Yantian Port an additional base for bulk cargo, logistics and river-sea transport services. The company acknowledged risks from fluctuating bulk commodity demand and increasing competition as other Jiangsu ports expand their cargo-handling capacity. DP World launches EUR 53.8 mln electrification project at Constanța Port terminal.

DP World launches EUR 53.8 mln electrification project at Constanța Port terminal. The project will enable docked vessels and terminal equipment to use electricity instead of fossil fuels at the Black Sea port. DP World announced that it launched a EUR 53.8 million project to electrify its container terminal at the Port of Constanța in Romania. The investment, co-financed by the European Union, is scheduled for completion by August 31, 2028. The financing package includes an EU grant of up to EUR 19.7 million through the Connecting Europe Facility, a loan of up to EUR 25 million from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and a contribution from terminal operator Constanța South Container Terminal. The project will electrify 29 container blocks through the installation of approximately 6 km of busbar infrastructure designed to power electric rubber-tired gantry cranes. DP World will also build a charging hub with 10 charging points and acquire 10 electric terminal tractors. A dedicated transformer station will support the new vehicles. Two onshore power supply systems, also known as cold ironing systems, will allow docked vessels to connect to shore-side electricity rather than operate their auxiliary engines while in port. The systems will be powered exclusively by electricity from renewable sources, the company said. The investment also includes three transformer stations, each fitted with three 2,000 kVA transformers, as well as two 5 MVA transformers for the shore-power systems. The project is part of a wider electrification program that includes a separate EUR 46.2 million investment in remotely operated electric gantry cranes, two electric mobile harbor cranes, and additional electric terminal tractors. The two components will bring DP World's total planned investment in electrifying its Constanța operations to EUR 100 million. Romania's Port of Constanța is the largest port on the Black Sea and an important hub on the EU's Trans-European Transport Network. Constanța South Container Terminal operates under DP World, a global logistics and port terminal company headquartered in Dubai. Free newsletters
