  • Develop and execute oligonucleotide liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry bioanalytical workflows, including sample preparation, extraction, analysis, and data review.
  • Support method transfer, familiarization, and routine troubleshooting for oligonucleotide assays, including chromatographic and ion-pairing performance issues.
  • Adjust workload across established oligonucleotide assay types to meet weekly study demand.
  • Review and handle analytical data in line with customer quality and compliance expectations.
  • Maintain in-scope analytical equipment operational and provide immediate user-level response to minor issues, minimizing downtime and bridging coverage until vendor service attends site.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and quality-control checks and manage consumables for in-scope liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry systems.
  • Diagnose and resolve minor instrument issues at the bench, including power cycling, basic troubleshooting, and user-level repairs such as addressing a crashed liquid chromatography needle.
  • Coordinate hardware updates and component replacements as required.
  • Route repairs that exceed user-level scope to the appropriate vendor service organization, such as SCIEX.
  • Manage instrument software updates, patching, and version control.
  • Deploy workstation operating-system updates, security patching, and configuration changes on instrument-controlling computers in coordination with the customer's information technology function to avoid disrupting acquisition.
  • Track and administer instrument software licenses to maintain operational continuity.

  • Ramp across established small-molecule assay types and absorb overflow demand.
  • Schedule small-molecule work around oligonucleotide bioanalysis and instrument support commitments, as agreed with the customer weekly.

About the company

Thermo Fisher Scientific

View

Thermo Fisher Scientific makes and sells the instruments, chemicals, consumables and lab services that drug companies, hospitals, universities and industrial labs use for research, testing and production. Its products cover work from gene sequencing and protein analysis to diagnostic tests and lab freezers, and its distribution arm ships supplies to labs worldwide. Drug developers also hire it to run clinical trials and to manufacture medicines under contract. It earns money from consumables that labs buy again and again, along with instrument sales, service contracts and outsourcing fees. The company traces its roots to Thermo Electron, founded in 1956, which merged with Fisher Scientific in 2006, and it is based in Waltham, Massachusetts.

What believers are saying

  • Drugmaker demand is firming: revenue rose 10% to $11.99 billion in the June 2026 quarter, 5% excluding deals and currency.
  • Profits are outpacing sales, which supports stock grants: adjusted earnings per share rose 13% in the June 2026 quarter.
  • Career paths span many businesses: Thermo Fisher runs four segments, from diagnostics to contract drug development.

What critics are saying

  • Factory jobs are shrinking: Thermo Fisher announced in January 2026 it will close its Asheville plant, cutting 421 jobs.
  • Whole units get sold: microbiology, with $645 million in 2025 sales, went to buyout firm Astorg in August 2026.
  • Cuts reach California too: Thermo Fisher filed in January 2026 to lay off 173 Carlsbad workers by March.

What makes Thermo Fisher Scientific unique

  • Many familiar lab brands sit under one roof: Thermo Fisher owns Thermo Scientific, Applied Biosystems, Invitrogen and Fisher Scientific.
  • Thermo Fisher reaches labs through its own sales force of about 14,000 people, per its 2025 annual filing.
  • Its trial-data unit Clario has supported about 70% of FDA and EMA novel drug approvals over the past decade.

Teen wins $25K for low-cost airborne bacteria sampler at Thermo Fisher Junior Innovators Challenge

Bailey Quinn Frank, 15, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, won the $25,000 Thermo Fisher Scientific ASCEND Award, the top prize at the 2026 Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge. Thermo Fisher Scientific and Society for Science announced the winners in Washington, D.C. Frank built a low-cost environmental DNA sampler that uses a small fan and filter paper to collect airborne bacteria. She says it could help rural communities monitor health threats where resources for disease surveillance are limited. The 30 finalists, chosen from nearly 2,000 applicants, shared more than $100,000 in awards. Four other top winners each received $10,000, including twin brothers Henry and Jack Grover, 14, who developed a hydrogel sprayer to stop wildfires reigniting.
