Prometheus Real Estate Group addresses California's housing shortage with launch of Harken apartment community in Los Altos.

Prometheus Real Estate Group addresses California's housing shortage with launch of Harken apartment community in Los Altos. October 14, 2026 SAN MATEO, CA - Prometheus Real Estate Group, one of the Bay Area's leading private multifamily operators, announced the opening of Harken, a new 172-unit apartment project at 5150 El Camino Real in Los Altos. Harken will be Los Altos' first new apartment project in decades and will offer large, thoughtfully designed one- and two-bedroom homes, averaging 1,134 square feet each. The property will also include 29 below-market-rate affordable housing units and help to address California's ongoing housing shortage. "Due to the lack of construction in recent years, it's charming downtown, great neighborhoods, and strong school district, it's been nearly impossible to find a place to live in Los Altos," said Don Peterson, Senior Vice President at Prometheus Real Estate Group. "With all of this in mind, Harken was designed to offer something different: a boutique experience with quality materials and thoughtful details throughout." Harken is a play on the term "harkening back," and its design centers on creating a respite from the pace of everyday life, with spaces that encourage slowing down and connection. Natural light and warm wood tones shape its design, complemented by a private listening lounge, two lobbies, and a clubhouse for work or gatherings. Amenities include a 24/7 gym, featuring Technogym cardio and strength-training equipment, a multi-functional training rack, a pool, a separate 20-by-10-foot spa, and towel service. Harken is located less than two miles from three top-rated Los Altos schools, including Almond Elementary School, Ardis G. Egan Junior High School, and Los Altos High School. The new luxury property is also less than two miles from the San Antonio Caltrain station, from which residents can travel to major metropolitan areas such as San Francisco and San Jose. Sitting between the downtowns of Los Altos and Mountain View, Harken provides easy access to both cities and is the best of both worlds. Leasing at the new Harken property begins this month, with occupancy expected to start in November. The waiting list is open now, with tours coming later this year.
