About the job

Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering is required.
  • At least 3 years of professional electrical design experience in productizing analytical or scientific instrumentation is required.
  • Hands-on expertise with multi-layer printed circuit board schematic capture and layout in Zuken or an equivalent tool is required.
  • A deep understanding of analog front-end design, including low-noise amplifiers, analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converter integration, and sensor signal conditioning, is required.
  • Demonstrated skill in digital interfaces and communication protocols, including SPI, I²C, UART, and CAN, is required.
  • Experience specifying and validating components for reliability, environmental ruggedness, and regulatory compliance with CE, UL, and CSA is required.
  • Expertise in electromagnetic compatibility and electromagnetic interference mitigation techniques, including shielding, board-level filtering, and ground-plane strategies, is required.
  • Strong proficiency in writing and reviewing design documentation, including schematics, bills of materials, test plans, and compliance reports, is required.
  • A history of collaborating with systems, mechanical, software, firmware, and test teams is required.
  • The position requires the ability to obtain a passport for international travel.
Responsibilities
  • Combine circuit modules and subsystems into cohesive instrument designs, ensuring interoperability, performance, and compliance with CE, UL, and CSA standards.
  • Develop and optimize multi-layer printed circuit boards in Zuken for reliable electronics while balancing compactness, signal integrity, and electromagnetic compatibility and interference compliance.
  • Create clear, modular schematics using modern design patterns and select components for simplicity, availability, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Model and document cable assemblies using computer-aided design cable models and detailed drawings, specifying routing, standardized connectors, and comprehensive bills of materials.
  • Interface temperature, pressure, optical, and limit-switch sensors to ensure accurate signal acquisition and communication between subsystems.
  • Implement and troubleshoot digital communication protocols, including Ethernet, USB, CAN, I²C, RS485, and RS232, to enable data exchange across instrument subsystems.
  • Implement shielding, board-level filtering, and ground-plane architectures to meet CISPR and IEC standards.
  • Manage power-path design, budgeting, grounding, shielding, and cabling to maintain signal integrity and system safety.
  • Build and test instrument prototypes using benchtop instruments such as oscilloscopes and multimeters, verify integrated-module functionality, and refine designs for product readiness.
  • Develop and execute validation plans to confirm overall instrument performance under real-world conditions.
  • Apply solutions such as modular design, standardized interfaces, and test-bench automation to streamline design cycles, accelerate development, and reduce bill-of-materials complexity.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering is preferred.
  • At least 5 years of professional electrical design experience in productizing analytical or scientific instrumentation is preferred.
  • A proven record of productizing lab-grade or functional prototypes, including driving design-for-manufacturing and design-for-test reviews, hardening designs for robustness, and transferring products from research and development into new product introduction, is preferred.
  • Experience optimizing component costs, developing alternate-sourcing strategies, and collaborating with procurement to manage long-lead items is preferred.
  • Hands-on experience performing design failure mode and effects analysis and other failure-mode analysis to identify, document, and mitigate potential design and process risks before production release is preferred.
  • A basic understanding of thermal management, including heat sinking and airflow, and enclosure-design trade-offs affecting electromagnetic interference and environmental ruggedness is preferred.
  • Knowledge of microelectromechanical systems sensors and devices is preferred.
  • Experience with high-vacuum technology and systems is preferred.
