Walgreens launches 2026-2027 Flu Index as activity tracks four weeks ahead of recent seasons. Science · OCT 21, 2026 PR Newswire New data highlights emerging respiratory illness trends and the importance of vaccination before activity increases locally DEERFIELD, Ill., Oct. 21, 2026... New data highlights emerging respiratory illness trends and the importance of vaccination before activity increases locally DEERFIELD, Ill., Oct. 21, 2026 /PRNewswire/ - Walgreens today launched the 2026-2027 Walgreens Flu Index, an interactive online tool that tracks flu, COVID-19 and other acute respiratory illness activity nationwide. Updated weekly on Mondays, the Flu Index provides state- and county-level insights using multiple sources, including Walgreens flu and COVID-19 testing data, prescription antivirals and over-the-counter cold and flu purchasing trends. This year's early data suggests flu season is already underway, sooner than in recent years. Nationally, flu activity is tracking approximately four weeks ahead of recent flu seasons, with cases increasing across many western states and Florida. Walgreens is also dispensing more flu antiviral prescriptions than during the same period last year. Sales data also shows increased demand for common cold and flu products, including double-digit year-over-year increases in cold and flu medications, at-home COVID-19 and flu tests, cough drops and tea. With flu activity beginning to increase, now is an ideal time to get vaccinated before it becomes more widespread in your community. Staying Protected This Flu Season As flu activity continues to evolve, vaccination remains an important way people can protect themselves throughout the season. Flu vaccines are updated each year to protect against the strains expected to spread. "Flu activity can vary significantly from one community to another, and knowing what's happening locally can make a real difference," said Rick Gates, Walgreens chief pharmacy & enterprise external affairs officer. "The Walgreens Flu Index gives people timely information to make informed decisions about prevention, including getting vaccinated before flu becomes more widespread in their community." Walgreens offers several flu vaccine options, including standard-dose vaccines, higher-dose vaccines, which are recommended by the CDC for patients 65 and older, as well as the new mRNA flu vaccine at select locations.[1] Patients can walk into a local Walgreens pharmacy or schedule for up to four patients in advance at Walgreens.com/ScheduleVaccine, through the Walgreens app, by texting "Flu" to 66879 or by calling 1-800-WALGREENS.[2] Walgreens is also investing in a more convenient vaccination experience this season by increasing pharmacy staffing, expanding appointment availability and allowing patients to schedule further in advance. As an added benefit, patients who get a vaccine at Walgreens can earn $15 in Walgreens Cash rewards on their next eligible in-store purchase of $5 or more as a myWalgreens(R) member. myWalgreens(R) member patients also receive 10% back in Walgreens Cash rewards on eligible purchases for the next 30 days.[3] Beyond vaccination, Walgreens pharmacists can help patients navigate flu season and identify options to manage common symptoms if illness strikes. Keeping cold and flu supplies on hand, such as Severe Cold & Flu Caplets, Honey Lemon Cough Drops, Sugar Free Hydration Plus Electrolyte Drink Mix and Vitamin C, can also make it easier to care for yourself and loved ones. Frequently Asked Questions What is the Walgreens Flu Index? The Walgreens Flu Index is an interactive online tool that tracks flu and COVID-19 activity nationwide. The map, which is updated every Monday, shows the current levels of flu, COVID-19 and overall acute respiratory illness activity relative to an annual baseline. The Flu Index utilizes multiple sources, including Walgreens flu and COVID-19 testing data, prescription antivirals and over-the-counter cold and flu purchasing trends to calculate a score that ranges from 0 (lowest activity) to 10 (highest activity). Scores are calculated weekly for each state/territory and over 1,500 counties.[4] Users can view national activity or search by state to see where their geographic area ranks in any given week and how current activity compares to last season. The Flu Index is not intended to illustrate flu severity, but rather to provide insight into where flu activity is occurring and how it is changing over time to help community members, media, healthcare providers and health officials make informed decisions. Why did Walgreens create the Walgreens Flu Index? For 125 years, Walgreens has been a trusted part of communities across the country, helping patients access the care, services and information they need to stay healthy. The Flu Index is an extension of that commitment. With thousands of locations nationwide, Walgreens is uniquely positioned to observe trends in testing, treatment and symptom management during the respiratory virus season. Walgreens created the Flu Index to turn those insights into a practical tool that helps patients better understand respiratory illness activity and make informed decisions for themselves and their families. How can people protect themselves if flu is spreading in their area? Getting vaccinated is one of the most effective ways to protect against flu, even when flu is already spreading in communities. Vaccination remains important regardless of current local activity. Walgreens offers flu shots nationwide with convenient walk-in availability and flexible scheduling options. Local Walgreens pharmacists can also help answer questions about vaccination and recommend products to help manage common symptoms if illness strikes. Should individuals still get vaccinated if they are not in an area with high flu or COVID-19 activity? Yes, it remains critically important to get vaccinated against flu, COVID-19 and other common respiratory illnesses, if eligible, regardless of current local activity. Flu activity can change throughout the season, so getting vaccinated now can help provide protection if flu begins circulating more widely in your area later. Flu shots are available at Walgreens pharmacies nationwide, and walk-ins are welcome. You can also schedule an appointment in advance at Walgreens.com/ScheduleVaccine, through the Walgreens app, by texting "Flu" to 66879 or by calling 1-800-WALGREENS. Sterility concerns lead FDA to recall thousands of eye drop products.

Sterility concerns lead FDA to recall thousands of eye drop products. More than 500,000 eye drop products have been recalled from store brands including Walgreens due to a "lack of assurance of sterility." The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Sterling Pharmaceutical Services LLC initiated the recall for the eye drops, which were sold under several brand names, including Walgreens, on Aug. 20. According to the FDA, the Class II recall covers nine products and nearly 750,000 units. Walgreens is said to account for a significant portion of the recalled products. According to the FDA's website, a Class II recall is a "situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote." More than 300,000 bottles of Walgreens Lubricant Eye Drops (0.5 fluid ounces) and 199,600 packs of the twin pack of the product sold and distributed by Walgreens have been recalled. Also part of the recall are more than 12,800 packs of AvKare Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium Ophthalmic Solution 0.5%, Lubricant Eye Drops (0.5 fluid ounces); 107,377 packs of the two-count twin packs distributed by AvKare; 19,284 bottles of Cameron Pharmaceuticals' Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium 0.5% Lubricant Eye Drops (0.5 fluid ounces); and 14,538 bottles of TRP The Relief Products Gentle Eyes Lubricant Eye Drops, Carboxymethylcellulose sodium 0.5%, and 34,368 tubes of Major LubriFresh P.M. Nighttime Ointment (0.125 ounces). To see all recalled products, you can visit the FDA's website. More than 39,000 bottles of Clear Eyes Maximum Itchy Eye Relief were recalled in August, with 2.5 million bottles of Lupin Pharmaceuticals prescription eye drops recalled the month prior due to contamination concerns. Consumers with the affected products should immediately stop using them and speak with their doctors, the FDA says.

Walgreens eye drops recalled over sterility concerns.

Walgreens eye drops recalled over sterility concerns. More than 500,000 Walgreens-branded eye-drop products are being recalled over sterility concerns as part of a broader recall involving nearly 750,000 eye-care products. Sterling Pharmaceutical Services LLC, based in Dupo, Illinois, initiated the recall on Aug. 20 because of a "lack of assurance of sterility," according to a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) enforcement report. The FDA classified the recall as Class II on Sept. 21. The designation means use of or exposure to the affected products may cause temporary or medically reversible health consequences, while the probability of serious health consequences is considered remote. WALMART, TRADER JOE'S FROZEN BERRY RECALL EXPANDS AFTER E COLI OUTBREAK SICKENED 17 Walgreens-branded products account for more than 500,000 units in the recall, including approximately 301,114 bottles of Walgreens Lubricant Eye Drops and 199,600 twin packs. The broader recall also includes eye-care products distributed under the AvKare, Reliable-1 Laboratories, Cameron Pharmaceuticals, TRP The Relief Products and Major brands. More than 120,000 packages of AvKare Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium Ophthalmic Solution 0.5% Lubricant Eye Drops are affected, including individual bottles and twin packs. FDA CONCLUDES INVESTIGATION INTO CYCLOSPORA OUTBREAK TIED TO RECALLED TAYLOR FARMS ICEBERG LETTUCE Products distributed by Reliable-1 Laboratories include Sodium Chloride Hypertonicity Ophthalmic Solution 5% and Lubricating Tears. The recall also includes Cameron Pharmaceuticals Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium 0.5% Lubricant Eye Drops, TRP The Relief Products Gentle Eyes Lubricant Eye Drops and Major LubriFresh P.M. Nighttime Ointment. The FDA says ophthalmic products pose a heightened risk because drugs applied to the eyes bypass some of the body's natural defenses. The agency says eye drops must be sterile to reduce the risk of infection. A representative for Walgreens did not immediately respond to FOX Business' request for comment.

Eye drops recalled for Walgreens brands. What you should check.

Eye drops recalled for Walgreens brands. What you should check. USA TODAY NETWORK Updated Oct. 3, 2026, 1:27 p.m. ET * Nearly 748,000 units of over-the-counter eye care products have been recalled nationwide due to sterility concerns. * The FDA has classified this as a Class II recall, meaning the health risk is considered temporary or remote. * Consumers should check the lot numbers and expiration dates of their products and stop using any that are part of the recall. Florida consumers who use Walgreens-branded eye drops and several other over-the-counter eye care products may want to check their medicine cabinets after federal regulators announced a recall involving nearly 748,000 units nationwide. The recall affects nine eye care products sold under multiple brand names, according to a community announcement and federal recall records. Sterling Pharmaceutical Services LLC of Dupo, Illinois, began the recall on Aug. 20 after concerns about a lack of assurance that the products are sterile. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration later designated the action as a Class II recall on Sept. 21, meaning use of the products could cause temporary or medically reversible health consequences, while the chance of serious health effects is considered remote. Among the affected products are Walgreens lubricant eye drops, one of the largest portions of the recall, along with products sold under the AvKare, Reliable-1 Laboratories, Cameron Pharmaceuticals, TRP The Relief Products and Major brand names. Which eye drops are included in the recall? The recall involves 747,844 units across nine products: * Cameron Pharmaceuticals Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium 0.5% Eye Lubricant, 0.5 fl oz (15 mL): 19,284 bottles * AvKare Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium Ophthalmic Solution 0.5%, Lubricant Eye Drops, 0.5 fluid ounces (15 mL): 12,864 packs * AvKare Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium Ophthalmic Solution 0.5%, Lubricant Eye Drops, two-count twin packs: 107,377 packs * Reliable-1 Laboratories Sodium Chloride Hypertonicity Ophthalmic Solution, 5%, 0.5 fluid ounces (15 mL): 11,083 bottles * Reliable-1 Laboratories Lubricating Tears, 0.5 fluid ounces (15 mL): 47,616 bottles * Walgreens Lubricant Eye Drops, Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium 0.5%, 0.5 fluid ounces (15 mL): 301,114 bottles * Walgreens Lubricant Eye Drops, two-count twin packs: 199,600 packs * TRP The Relief Products Gentle Eyes Lubricant Eye Drops, Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium 0.5%: 14,538 bottles * Major LubriFresh P.M. Nighttime Ointment, 0.125 ounces (3.5 g) tubes: 34,368 tubes What the FDA classification means. The FDA classified the action as a Class II recall. Under the agency's definition, a Class II recall involves products that could cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health effects, or situations in which the likelihood of serious health consequences is remote. The recall stems from concerns that the affected products may not be sterile. USA TODAY contacted Sterling Pharmaceutical Services for comment on Oct. 2 but had not received a response. What Florida consumers should do. Consumers who use any of the affected products should check both the lot number and expiration date listed on the packaging. The FDA's enforcement report contains the specific lot numbers and expiration dates included in the recall. Consumers can compare their products with the federal listing at accessdata.fda.gov. If a product matches the recalled lot information, the FDA advises consumers to stop using it immediately and contact a health care provider. Additional eye drop safety information is available at fda.gov. The full recall database also can be found through the FDA's enforcement report and USA TODAY's recalls tracker at usatoday.com. 5TYNTK september 30 - school suspensions spike, Jetport cars burn, algae bloom dispersed, Saco Walgreens closing, shaving for cancer. 1. Spruce Mountain High School in Jay has already suspended 19 students just over a month into the school year. Six suspensions were for arguments and five for inappropriate language toward staff, while 45 other students have received detention. The principal says six students have also been disciplined for racial or sexual civil rights violations. (WGME) 2. Four rental cars caught fire at the Portland Jetport Tuesday morning. Two of the vehicles were destroyed in an overflow lot where rental cars are stored. No one was hurt, Jetport operations were not affected, and investigators say the fire is not considered suspicious. (WGME) 3. This weekend's nor'easter may have helped break up the algae bloom that's been impacting parts of Maine's coast. The Department of Marine Resources says big storms can disperse the bloom or push it offshore, but it'll take a few days to know the full impact. Officials say the algae does not threaten human health and Maine seafood remains safe to eat. (WGME) 4. Another Walgreens in Maine is closing, this time in Saco. The store will permanently close November 10th, with Saco's mayor calling it a blow to the community, especially vulnerable seniors. A recent CBS13 investigation found 45% of Mainers live in areas with limited access to pharmacy services. (WGME) 5. An Ogunquit business owner shaved his head Tuesday night to raise money for Maine kids battling cancer. Rick Dolliver has raised more than $230,000 through the event over the past two years, and this year he's aiming for $300,000 for the Maine Children's Cancer Program. Family, friends and customers also shaved their heads as part of the fundraiser. (NCM) Made Hot in Maine by the Law Offices of Joe Bornstein.
