About the Job

Requirements

  • Strong technical foundation in computer science or a closely related discipline, gained through formal education and/or equivalent industry experience, with evidence of continuous learning and technical depth.
  • Extensive experience building and operating production systems at scale; this often aligns with 10+ years in industry, although demonstrated impact, sound judgement, and leadership are valued over tenure alone.
  • Deep understanding of core computer science concepts, including data structures, algorithms, system design, and complexity trade-offs, with the ability to apply them pragmatically to high-scale problems.
  • Ability to design, write, and evolve high-quality software in one or more modern programming languages, with a focus on maintainability, performance, and operational robustness.
  • Ability to decompose ambiguous, multi-dimensional problems and drive them to clear, effective technical outcomes.
  • Ability to articulate complex technical ideas clearly, build alignment across teams, and constructively challenge assumptions at all levels.
  • Track record of mentoring engineers, raising technical standards, and contributing positively to engineering culture beyond individual delivery.
  • Curiosity about users and product metrics, and willingness to understand why a feature exists before deciding how to build it.
  • Ability to reason about trade-offs holistically, including client value and business context.
  • Pragmatic judgement about scope, including distinguishing a learning-focused minimum viable product from unnecessary gold-plating.
  • Comfort making product decisions without a fully specified ticket and changing direction when data supports doing so.
  • Fluency with AI coding tools as part of the engineering workflow, with measurably increased productivity; ability to maintain understanding, accountability, and ownership of solutions produced.
  • Commitment to quality, correctness, reliability, and maintaining healthy codebases, particularly for money-adjacent systems.
  • Working English, the engineering language.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership across one or more critical domains, owning the design and evolution of large-scale, business-critical systems within the global financial platform.
  • Set architectural direction by leading system design, making high-leverage technical decisions, and driving alignment on long-term technology strategy across teams.
  • Partner with Product, Design, and Engineering leadership to translate business outcomes into scalable, resilient technical solutions, influencing roadmap decisions and trade-offs.
  • Operate across the full system lifecycle, from early discovery and architecture through production operations, reliability, performance, and cost optimisation.
  • Raise the technical bar organisation-wide by defining and evolving engineering standards, guiding design reviews, and mentoring senior engineers to multiply impact beyond individual code contributions.
  • Identify systemic risks, technical debt, and cross-team dependencies early, and drive initiatives that improve velocity, quality, and resilience at scale.
  • Champion engineering excellence through testing strategies, CI/CD, observability, and operational readiness, ensuring systems are secure, compliant, and production-grade.
  • Lead by example in modern engineering practices, including responsible use of AI-assisted development tools to accelerate delivery and learning.
  • Own client problems from ambiguous idea through shipped, measured, and iterated product outcomes.
  • Own a defined product area, lead projects with concise design documentation, join the on-call rotation for owned systems, and mentor new hires.
  • Help establish engineering standards, interview expectations, and culture for the growing Valencia hub.

Desired Qualifications

  • Fintech, payments, or regulated-domain experience.
  • Experience in either web or mobile engineering, complementing experience in the other.
  • Experience working early at a new office or as part of a founding team.
  • Experience shipping AI features into a product, with a considered view of where they help users and where they do not.
