Requirements
  • Understand Behavioral Health Organization requirements and work effectively with people and groups across cultural differences.
  • Accurately diagnose mental health issues and develop treatment plans based on diagnoses, without inappropriately diagnosing behavioral problems as mental illnesses.
  • Understand chemical dependency treatment and coordinate mental health services with chemical dependency treatment providers.
  • Complete an annual clinical competency test as a mental health therapist.
  • Sign a permanent oath of confidentiality covering all patient-related information.
  • Pass a Washington State Patrol background check.
  • Hold a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in psychology, counseling, or social work that includes coursework in psychological diagnostics.
  • Have four or more years of experience in the field.
  • Meet criteria for a Mental Health Professional.
  • Hold and maintain an active Washington State Agency Affiliated Counselor License, or a mental health Associate License including Marriage and Family Therapist, Mental Health Counselor, or Clinical Social Worker; the license may be pending for up to 90 days if applied for within 7 days of an employment offer.
  • Maintain a current TB test.
  • Meet the minority mental health therapist requirement under Washington Administrative Code.
  • Perform a minimum of 80 hours of face-to-face contact and 80 encounters each month.
  • Work additional evening or weekend hours as needed to fulfill job duties.
Responsibilities
  • Assist with agency compliance with Washington Administrative Code, Revised Code of Washington, and other relevant laws, regulations, and contracts.
  • Assist in developing and implementing policies and procedures as directed by the Program Manager.
  • Educate staff on mental health service referral processes and psychoeducational topics, including suicide risk assessment and behavior modification, as directed by the Program Manager.
  • Maintain documentation of mental health services and follow-through in patient charts.
  • Provide diagnostic assessments for patients, document outcomes, justify diagnoses, and communicate outcomes and recommendations to the primary Chemical Dependency Counselor.
  • Provide age-appropriate care and identify patients’ age-specific needs.
  • Refer patients to psychiatric services, gather records and background information, attend sessions with psychiatric providers, monitor medication effects, and provide feedback to psychiatrists.
  • Consult with staff regarding mental health and behavioral issues and develop treatment plans to address patients’ emotional needs and behavioral problems.
  • Provide individual counseling in coordination with other systems as needed.
  • Conduct suicide risk assessments, develop treatment plans for suicidal ideation or gestures, provide case management, and provide crisis stabilization.
  • Gather information about prior mental health services for treatment-plan development; make referrals and exchange information with outside service providers.
  • Support staff regarding staff or patient mental health needs, maintain confidentiality, and provide concrete approaches for challenging situations.
