About the job

Requirements
  • A software engineering background with the technical credibility to work alongside strong senior individual contributors.
  • Proven experience as a people manager of engineers, including running review cycles, progression, and calibration.
  • A track record of owning engineering hiring at volume, not just participating, both before and since large language models changed how candidates are assessed.
  • Experience in engineering organisations of around 30–50 people; large-corporate backgrounds are not sought.
  • Comfort working without enterprise scaffolding, including without dedicated human resources, information technology, or procurement teams.
  • Long experience improving processes, standards, and delivery in high-performing engineering teams.
  • Measure success by how much better other people's teams work, listen for context before applying a framework, and know when to push back or reconsider an assumption.
  • Fluent written and spoken English.
Responsibilities
  • Own the engineering hiring process end to end, from funnel design to interview processes and candidate evaluation; design role-specific interviews with tech leads and work with the Head of Talent to improve the overall funnel, while tech leads and leadership make final hiring decisions.
  • Own the twice-yearly review cycle, progression framework, and calibration across teams; ensure standards and outcomes are consistent, conduct some review conversations, make compensation recommendations, and decide promotions jointly with the CTO.
  • Identify delays in delivery, flag when the maintenance-to-development balance has slipped or agreed processes are not being followed, and provide metrics and reporting to help tech leads catch issues early.
  • Improve engineering processes and standards, identify weaknesses in current practices, and help plan for how growth will affect ways of working.
  • Champion developer-experience investment, including driving effective adoption of large-language-model-based tooling; try tools, processes, and techniques hands-on to assess their effectiveness.
  • Own cloud spend, the software-as-a-service estate and licensing, security processes including starters and leavers, and company-wide onboarding for technical staff; tech leads own team-specific onboarding.
  • Run a regular forum with the CTO and tech leads covering the hiring pipeline, attrition risk, the balance between maintenance and development work, and areas where standards are drifting.
  • Partner with tech leads on people-management issues and consistent processes across teams, with technical decisions remaining under the tech leads' authority.
  • Identify training or conferences that would support people's development.
Desired Qualifications
  • Hands-on experience rolling out large-language-model-based developer tooling across a team and measuring its impact.
  • Experience managing cloud spend, software-as-a-service estates, and licensing.
  • Experience owning security processes such as starter and leaver access management.
