About the Job

Requirements

  • A Master of Science or Ph.D. in Geophysics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, or a related quantitative field.
  • At least 5 years of hands-on post-academic full-waveform inversion experience, including personally running full-waveform inversion on real seismic data.
  • Demonstrated experience applying machine learning to geophysical or other physics-based scientific problems.
  • Working knowledge of seismic imaging and the numerical methods behind it, including wave propagation, inverse problems, and optimization.
  • Proficiency in Python and hands-on experience with PyTorch, including training, validation, and performance evaluation.
  • Experience working with large scientific datasets and computational workflows.
  • The ability to design fair comparisons, recognize results that are too good to be true, and communicate uncertainty honestly.

Responsibilities

  • Develop machine learning and hybrid physics-machine-learning methods for seismic imaging, inversion, and velocity model building, including machine-learning-assisted reverse time migration, least-squares reverse time migration, and full-waveform inversion.
  • Apply deep learning, generative models, neural operators, and physics-informed approaches to denoising, interpolation, image enhancement, model prediction, uncertainty estimation, and automated interpretation.
  • Build workflows that handle large multidimensional seismic datasets on graphics processing unit and cloud infrastructure.
  • Validate new methods against established physics-based approaches and make an evidence-based case for where they add value and where they do not.
  • Move successful prototypes into production imaging workflows with the required documentation and reproducibility.
  • Communicate results clearly to geophysicists, data scientists, and asset teams.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with neural operators, implicit neural representations, generative models, or physics-informed neural networks applied to wave-equation problems.
  • Experience combining wave physics with machine learning, including differentiable modeling and inversion.
  • Experience with uncertainty quantification, surrogate modeling, or machine-learning-assisted optimization for expensive geophysical workflows.
  • Graphics processing unit, high-performance computing, or distributed computing experience, particularly with Amazon Web Services.
  • Experience with offshore or Gulf of America seismic data.
  • Effective use of artificial-intelligence-assisted coding tools to accelerate development and debugging of scientific workflows.
  • A record of research prototypes that reached production use.

About the Company

Occidental Petroleum

Produces oil and gas and develops carbon capture

Occidental Petroleum produces and sells oil and natural gas to energy customers in the United States and overseas. Its portfolio spans the Permian Basin and the Rockies, offshore Gulf of America fields, and the Al Hosn Gas project in the United Arab Emirates. It earns revenue from selling these commodities, while its marketing business also buys third-party crude to make use of pipeline and export terminal capacity. Its subsidiaries 1PointFive and Carbon Engineering develop direct air capture technology and industrial projects to remove carbon dioxide from the air and store it underground. Founded in 1920, Occidental is headquartered in Houston, Texas.
