Ciena Corporation is deploying its Waveserver platform with Openreach, a major UK telecommunications provider, to deliver high-capacity network services across Britain. The platform uses WaveLogic 6 1.6Tb/s coherent technology and will serve wholesale customers, including cable landing stations, data centres and core network nodes. The deployment combines 400G and 800G client traffic over dedicated 1.6Tb/s wavelengths, with a compact chassis supporting up to 32 400G services. It enables Openreach to introduce national 800G services whilst providing capacity for higher speeds. Ciena faces competition from Corning and Nokia in the optical networking market. Both competitors are expanding their optical connectivity capabilities and manufacturing capacity, particularly for AI infrastructure applications. Ciena shares have gained 27.3% over the past month, outperforming the industry's 14.8% rise.
Openreach deploy Ciena's 1.6Tbps Waveserver tech across UK fibre network. Wednesday, Oct 7th, 2026 (10:04 am) - Score 40 Network access provider Openreach (BT) have begun deploying Ciena's Waveserver (WaveLogic 6) technology across their UK full fibre network for network operators, which will help to support their existing and future Optical Spectrum Extended Access (OSEA) products, including via national 800G (Gbps) services for the first time. Ciena's WaveLogic 6 is an advanced optical networking technology that can transport up to 1.6Tbps (Terabits of data per second) across a single wavelength of light. The goal of this upgrade is to help their wholesale customers meet future demands for capacity as Openreach continues to grow across cloud services, international subsea connections, and data centres. The new tech will enable Openreach to offer tailored network solutions serving specialist locations, such as Cable Landing Stations (CLS), access and backhaul services to Core intersect nodes and DCs. The solution includes the deployment of 400G and 800G client traffic over dedicated 1.6Tbps wavelengths, with a 2RU chassis supporting up to 32 x 400G services. Lovely. It also introduces national 800G services for the first time and creates a clear path to even faster services as customers' needs grow," said the announcement. Nicolas Lemaitre, Openreach's Director of Products, said: "Demand for fast, reliable connectivity is growing rapidly. This investment shows how Openreach is strengthening its network to support wholesale customers across the UK. By using Ciena's Waveserver and WL6 technology, we're preparing our services for the next wave of digital growth, including increasing demand from AI applications and Critical National Infrastructure." Ciena said they will also provide specialist support to help Openreach deploy, proactively monitor and maintain its OSEA optical product. This continues their long-standing partnership, while helping Openreach to introduce new services more quickly. None of this should be confused with direct consumer broadband connections via FTTP, although there is a complementary relationship as the "heavy machinery" in the background. Angola Cables to boost capacity on transatlantic SACS and MONET subsea cable systems. Lotz is a journalist with over a decade of experience covering business and technology, with a focus on how innovation is shaping the African continent. His interests range from data centers and energy to finance and emerging technology. Through sharp analysis and experience across multiple fields, Lotz is keen to showcase how Africa is becoming a major contender in the digital world. October 1, 2026 at 6:56 PM GMT+8 Angola Cables, a telecommunications and digital solutions provider, is planning to bolster its transatlantic network to support hyperscale, cloud, and AI traffic across the MONET and South Atlantic Cable System (SACS) subsea cables. The MONET system links the US and Brazil over 10,556 km, while SACS bridges Brazil to Angola over 6,165 km. Together, these two systems allow data to travel between the US and Angola with a round trip delay of 130 milliseconds. As noted in a press release, the upgrades will not only support surging bandwidth demands, but also help Angola Cables simplify its operations through software control and management capabilities. "Our submarine cable systems are a critical digital bridge connecting Africa with the Americas, offering a diverse and secure route between these continents, while demand from hyperscalers and cloud providers continues to accelerate," said Adriano Caldevilla, Angola Cables Chief Technology Officer. Angola Cables will deploy Ciena's Waveserver, powered by WaveLogic 6 Extreme, along with its 6500 Packet-Optical Platform, and Navigator Network Control Suite to increase the capacity and performance of its existing subsea network. The deployment will give Angola Cables the ability to deliver high-capacity connectivity across the system, including 800G client interfaces on MONET. "Together with Ciena, we will enhance the scale, flexibility, and intelligence of our subsea infrastructure to help customers build and expand AI-ready networks while maximizing the performance of our existing fiber assets," added Caldevilla. SACS was the first subsea cable to directly link Africa and South America. Its construction allowed African traffic to reach Brazil without routing through Europe and the US first. The cable was completed in 2018 and designed with a capacity of 40 Tbps. MONET has been operational since December 2017 and connects Praia Grande and Fortaleza in Brazil to Boca Raton, Florida, in the US. According to the Africa Global Forum, the African AI market is projected to grow from US$ 4.5 billion in 2025 to US$ 16.5 billion by 2030. However, the continent has only one percent of global AI compute capacity. While countries are working to improve their compute capacity, for the time being enterprises that need access to AI compute have to look abroad for that capacity. Upgrades to the links connecting Africa to that capacity are vital as demand continues to grow and compute catches up.
