A $500,000 position in the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) puts $40,400 into NVIDIA alone, as the chipmaker made up 8.08% of the fund on August 31, 2026. The fund's top 10 holdings account for 37.78%, or $188,900. The S&P 500 weights companies by market value, so NVIDIA's growth lifted its share automatically. Its stock rose 1,005.49% over five years to October 9, 2026, while VOO rose 90.68%. Concentration brings swings. A 2% weekly drop in NVIDIA on that slice costs about $808, roughly five years of VOO's $150 annual fee at 0.03%. Investors who also hold NVIDIA shares or a tech fund may face higher exposure than the fund's weight suggests.
The Council for Economic Education has launched the National Investment Challenge, a new competition designed to teach high school students foundational investing skills. The challenge will use Vanguard's free My Classroom Investor simulation, where students manage mock 30-year portfolios and respond to market shifts and unexpected events. Early access opens in November, with the competition starting in January 2027. It will include qualifying rounds, state rounds, and culminate in a national final in Philadelphia in May, with teams competing for cash prizes. In the simulation, students choose characters with financial goals and manage portfolios containing stocks, bonds, and ETFs. The programme aligns with CEE Standards and the CFA Investment Foundations exam, helping students build credential-ready skills whilst learning long-term investment principles.

Vanguard is pushing into Fidelity's turf.
Vanguard has entered a definitive agreement to acquire Altruist, an AI-forward wealth technology and custody platform serving financial advisors. The deal, expected to close later this year pending regulatory approvals, aims to expand access to financial advice by enabling advisors to serve more clients efficiently. Vanguard first invested in Altruist in 2020 to increase competition in the registered investment advisor custody space. Following the acquisition, Altruist will operate as a standalone business, retaining its leadership, brand, and operating model whilst gaining access to Vanguard's resources and investment expertise. The transaction terms were not disclosed. Altruist will continue focusing on providing integrated technology solutions for independent financial advisors, combining custody services with portfolio management tools.
