HSBC downgrades Akamai to hold, cuts target to $123 on cloud margin pressure

HSBC has downgraded Akamai Technologies to Hold from Buy and slashed its target price to $123 from $171, citing weaker cloud infrastructure margins and slower long-term growth prospects. The bank cut its 2026 non-GAAP operating profit estimate to $1.144 billion from $1.169 billion and lowered 2027-28 EPS forecasts by 3% to 8%. HSBC now expects Akamai's EPS to grow at an 8.5% compound annual rate from 2026 through 2028, below its 10%-15% forecast for the broader sector. Akamai reported second-quarter revenue of $1.10 billion, up 5.4% year-on-year. However, non-GAAP operating margin fell to 24.6% from 29.6% a year earlier, whilst non-GAAP EPS declined 8.1% to $1.59. HSBC expects Akamai to maintain elevated capital spending, with capex averaging 36% of revenue from 2026 through 2028.

Akamai launches Workforce Protector to secure AI adoption and prevent data loss in real time

Akamai Technologies has launched Akamai Workforce Protector, formerly known as LayerX, a security platform designed for the AI era. The solution secures employee interactions with AI, SaaS, web and private applications in real time, directly at the point of interaction. The platform offers several key capabilities. It provides real-time AI governance to discover "shadow AI" usage and enforce policies within browser sessions. It enables zero-disruption deployment without requiring users to switch browsers or organisations to redesign network architecture. The system also prevents data loss by stopping sensitive information from being uploaded to unauthorised AI models. Workforce Protector integrates with Akamai's existing security infrastructure, which already secures applications, APIs and infrastructure. The platform extends visibility into modern desktop AI applications and emerging AI workflows.

Akamai Q2 earnings beat estimates as revenues rise 5% y/y on AI and cybersecurity demand

Akamai Technologies reported second-quarter 2026 results that beat analyst estimates, with revenues reaching $1.1 billion, up 5% year-over-year. The company's adjusted earnings per share came in at $1.59, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.58. Revenue growth was driven by strong demand for AI-driven and cybersecurity offerings. The Security Technology Group generated $604.4 million, whilst Cloud Infrastructure Services grew 39% year-over-year to $99.3 million, reflecting increased GPU deployments. However, GAAP net income fell to $79.4 million from $103.6 million in the prior-year quarter. Significant investments in GPUs, colocation, and cloud infrastructure weighed on profitability. Non-GAAP income from operations decreased to $270.7 million from $308.6 million year-over-year due to higher operating expenses.
