'Never worth the risk': Metrolinx relays importance of respecting rail signals, crossings. Rail Safety Week runs Sept. 21 to 27; there will be an interactive pop-up at the Bradford GO station Friday InnisfilToday Staff Sep 22, 2026 12:15 PM NEWS RELEASE METROLINX *********************** Every year, Metrolinx partners with Operation Lifesaver to raise awareness and educate communities about the importance of rail safety across the region. During Rail Safety Week from September 21-27, Metrolinx will be bringing rail safety education into communities across the region, encouraging people of all ages to stay alert and make safe choices around stations, trains, buses and rail crossings. Whether it's ignoring signs and signals at a rail crossing, crossing tracks in undesignated areas, entering restricted spaces, or walking along tracks, it's never worth the risk. These preventable incidents reinforce the importance of making safe choices and following simple safety practices that help keep everyone safe. Rail safety starts with InnisfilToday all. InnisfilToday all must do its part to be safe and alert on platforms and near tracks, adhere to yellow line safety, follow all signs and signals at rail crossings, stay off railway property and avoid crossing tracks anywhere other than at designated crossings. To recognize this important time, Metrolinx will join its rail industry partners, safety organizations and law enforcement in hosting events throughout the week to help everyone safely navigate around rail transit. Where you can find InnisfilToday during Rail Safety Week: * Safety event at Union Station on September 23: * Stop by and say hi to GO Bear, chat with safety experts, and pick up rail safety resources, * Interactive pop-ups with its Community Engagement teams: * Langstaff GO and Finch Avenue Grade Crossing - September 22 * King City GO and Markham GO - September 23 * Bloor GO, Brampton GO and Union Station Bus Terminal - September 24 * Bradford GO and Stavebank Road - September 25 * Kids rail safety community event on September 26, 2026: * During Rail Safety Week, Metrolinx is inviting families to the Kids Safety Village of Durham Region for an interactive open house event to raise awareness of rail and transit safety. In March 2026, Metrolinx deployed its largest-ever class of Special Constables, and a further cohort of Special Constables is being deployed in July 2026. These additions enhance frontline capacity and support a safe and secure experience for customers and employees. * Reporting unsafe content online In response to the unfortunate rise of dangerous transit videos circulating on social media, InnisfilToday has partnered with Operation Lifesaver and the Railway Association of Canada to call on Ontarians to report and flag any videos that display dangerous behaviour near rail tracks. Major construction underway at Woodbine GO Station.

Major construction underway at Woodbine GO Station. The Ontario Government announced that major construction is underway at Woodbine GO Station, with crews now building station platforms that will connect daily riders to the Kitchener GO Line, Union-Pearson (UP) Express and regional transit services. "The start of major construction at Woodbine GO is great news for families and commuters in Etobicoke and along the entire Kitchener Line," said Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario. "As part of our historic expansion of GO service across the Greater Golden Horseshoe, this new station will increase capacity, cut travel times and connect thousands more people to reliable, affordable transit." Construction builds on the site clearing, grading and excavation that began last year, as well as the completion of a temporary track separation and two access bridges that paved the way for platform construction. "Metrolinx is proud to be building new stations and links to entertainment destinations across Ontario. Not only will the new Woodbine Station serve as the front door to world-class gaming and racing, but its completion will also provide new ways to access Pearson and better enable greater service on the Kitchener Line, " said Michael Lindsay, president and CEO, Metrolinx. Once complete, the new station will include island platforms serving GO Transit and UP Express trains, a bus loop connecting riders to local transit, dedicated GO parking, pedestrian bridges and fully accessible, barrier-free facilities. In addition to Woodbine Racetrack, the station will create new links between the UP Express, Kitchener GO train and Pearson International Airport, as well as local bus services including the TTC, MiWay, York Region Transit and Brampton Transit. "Woodbine GO Station will make it faster and easier for Ontarians to get where they're going, whether they're travelling for work, school, entertainment or catching a flight at Pearson Airport," said Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation. Major construction underway at Woodbine GO Station.

Major construction underway at Woodbine GO Station. New station will connect thousands more people to two-way, all-day GO service along the Kitchener Line September 17, 2026 Table of contents. TORONTO - Major construction is underway at Woodbine GO Station, marking another significant milestone in the Ontario government's plan to provide two-way, all-day service across core segments of the GO Transit network. Crews are now building station platforms that will connect thousands of daily riders to the Kitchener GO Line, Union-Pearson (UP) Express and regional transit services across Toronto, York Region, Brampton and Mississauga. The project will create over 300 good-paying jobs and is part of Ontario's historic investment of nearly $70 billion to deliver the largest transit expansion in North America. "The start of major construction at Woodbine GO is great news for families and commuters in Etobicoke and along the entire Kitchener Line," said Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario. "As part of our historic expansion of GO service across the Greater Golden Horseshoe, this new station will increase capacity, cut travel times and connect thousands more people to reliable, affordable transit." Woodbine GO Station will help families and commuters access jobs, housing and opportunities across one of Toronto's fastest-growing areas, while putting riders steps away from major destinations, including Woodbine Racetrack. Construction builds on the site clearing, grading and excavation that began last year, as well as the completion of a temporary track separation and two access bridges that paved the way for platform construction. "Under the leadership of Premier Ford, our government is investing nearly $70 billion to deliver the largest transit expansion in North America, cutting travel times, fighting gridlock and connecting more people to jobs, housing and opportunities across the province," said Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation. "Woodbine GO Station will make it faster and easier for Ontarians to get where they're going, whether they're travelling for work, school, entertainment or catching a flight at Pearson Airport." Ontario has invested over $15 billion to date into GO Expansion projects which will deliver faster, more frequent and more convenient service across the region. The province continues to make significant service upgrades along the Kitchener Line, including launching daily round trips between Toronto and Stratford, introducing the first-ever weekend service between Toronto and Kitchener and reaching an agreement-in-principle to acquire more than 20 kilometres of the Halton subdivision between Bramalea GO and Georgetown GO stations, supporting two-way, all-day service. Quick facts. * Woodbine GO Station will be located at the Woodbine Racetrack along Highway 27, between the existing Etobicoke North and Malton GO Stations on the Kitchener Line. * The station will replace the nearby Etobicoke North GO Station, which lacks the capacity to accommodate future growth along the line. * The station will create new links between GO Transit, UP Express and Pearson International Airport, as well as local bus services including the TTC, MiWay, York Regional Transit and Brampton Transit. * Woodbine GO will improve access to Humber Polytechnic North Campus, which has more than 19,000 full-time students, as well as Woodbine Mall and Etobicoke General Hospital. Quotes. "Metrolinx is proud to be building new stations and links to entertainment destinations across Ontario. Not only will the new Woodbine Station serve as the front door to world-class gaming and racing, but its completion will also provide new ways to access Pearson and better enable greater service on the Kitchener Line." - Michael Lindsay President and CEO, Metrolinx "Woodbine GO Station will be transformative for Toronto's northwest, improving transit access and unlocking the delivery of more than 20,000 new homes as part of a major new urban development centred around Woodbine Racetrack. Horse racing will remain the heart and soul of the destination, with new communities, activities and investment not only building a new cornerstone in our city but also helping to strengthen the future of our sport in Ontario." - Michael Copeland CEO, Woodbine Entertainment "The new Woodbine GO Station is an important investment in the region's transportation network. The station will expand access to regional transit in a major employment, education and entertainment area, giving workers, students and visitors more transportation choices, while helping to reduce pressure on our congested roads. It also creates opportunities for future transit investments around Canada's second-largest employment zone that would further improve the connectivity, competitiveness and accessibility of the region." - Giles Gherson President and CEO, Toronto Region Board of Trade "Woodbine GO Station is an important investment, and we welcome Ontario moving this project forward. Better transit connections improve access to jobs, support economic growth and strengthen regional productivity." - Marco D'Angelo President and CEO, Canadian Urban Transit Association Additional resources.

Metrolinx hands out limited-edition Lake Ontario Presto cards at Union Station.

Metrolinx hands out limited-edition Lake Ontario Presto cards at Union Station. Provincial transit agency Metrolinx handed out roughly 1,000 limited-edition Lake Ontario-themed Presto cards on Tuesday as part of a drive to push local pride. The transit cards were handed out near the UP Express section of Union Station, emblazoned with a small graphic of water and the sun in the style of a patch. On one side, the card reads: "Lake Ontario, Now and Always." Metrolinx said the cards were a chance to boost local pride amidst an ongoing trade war with the United States, which has seen President Donald Trump rename the lake within America. Get daily national news. "We're proud to operate bus and rail service along the shores of Lake Ontario, from Oshawa to Niagara," Metrolinx wrote in a statement. "Today's customer engagement event and limited-edition PRESTO card giveaway celebrate the pride Ontarians and Canadians have in this iconic Great Lake and the name it has carried for generations - Lake Ontario, now and always." Story continues below advertisement Trump previously signed an order directing the U.S. government to refer to Lake Ontario, one of the Great Lakes, as "Lake America," in his latest shot against Canada after trade talks fell apart. Prime Minister Mark Carney responded to the change, saying the name of Lake Ontario would remain "now and always." Those words also appeared on the sign unveiled Saturday. Then, at the end of August, Ontario Premier Doug Ford unveiled a $25,000 giant blue sign on the shores of the lake, which bore the same inscription as the Presto cards. "President Trump can call it whatever he wants, but I can tell you the rest of the world will always call it Lake Ontario," Ford told reporters when he unveiled the sign. "I received numerous calls from governors, they're saying we're always going to call it Lake Ontario, and obviously Canada's always going to call it Lake Ontario." Metrolinx said all 1,000 limited-edition cards were snapped up on Tuesday.
