A high school diploma or GED is required.
Phlebotomy certification from an accredited agency is required, as required by the state of employment.
At least 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a laboratory or hospital setting is required.
CPR certification is required.
Knowledge of medical terminology is required.

Responsibilities

Perform blood draws; label and centrifuge specimens; record maintenance data and decontamination; and update patient information.
Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
Explain the venipuncture or other specimen-collection process clearly and courteously to patients.
Demonstrate proper technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
Understand physicians' orders.
Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes; label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
Check test requisitions or computer labels against scripts for accuracy.
Package specimens for transport.
Store specimens at required temperatures, place samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes, label them accurately, and follow applicable protocols to maintain specimen integrity during transport.
Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
Wear appropriate attire, including required personal protective equipment.
Attend annual department trainings.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Houston Behavioral Healthcare Hospital is currently recruiting a skilled and experienced Phlebotomist, PRN Phlebotomist, (6:30am-2:30pm), join our team of healthcare professionals. As a Phlebotomist, you will have the opportunity to work with a diverse group of patients and make a difference in their well-being.

Phlebotomist Responsibilities

Experience doing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data and decontamination, updating patient information, etc.
Collects and stores specimens according to established procedures
Properly explains in a clear but courteous manner the process of the venipuncture (blood drawing) and or other specimen collection (ex. urine or fecal) as required
Demonstrate technique/s using straight needles and/or butterfly needles
Fully understand all of the physicians' orders
Matches laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes; label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order
Checks all test requisitions or computer label against script to ensure 100% correct
Package specimens for transport
Stores specimen sample according to required temperature, places samples in appropriate collection container/ tube, accurately labels, follows different procedures as outlined by specific to protocol deemed necessary for transport to maintain integrity of the specimen.
Understands and complies with OSHA and DEP regulations
Wears appropriate attire including all PPE
Attend annual department trainings
Other duties as assigned

Requirements

Education: High School Diploma or GED

Certifications: Phlebotomy certification from an accredited agency, for the state employed as required by state

Experience: Minimum of 6 months work experience performing venipunctures in a lab or hospital setting .

CPR certification
