Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is required; a Master of Science in Nursing may be used in lieu of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of three years of nursing experience is required.
  • Experience with hiring, staff development, and team building is required.
  • Experience with quality improvement, including developing initiatives, monitoring them, and demonstrating improvements in clinical care quality, is required.
  • A current, unencumbered registered nurse license in Oregon is required.
  • American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support certification is required.
  • American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification is required within 90 days of hire.
Responsibilities
  • Provide direct support to the Nurse Manager through administrative leadership and direction.
  • Assume responsibility and accountability for patient care activities, unit operations, and staff functions.
  • Provide direct patient care when urgently needed and supervise care provided by nurses and supportive staff.
  • Develop high-functioning interdisciplinary teams.
  • Provide leadership in a specific clinical or administrative area.
  • Participate in coaching, counseling, timely feedback to staff, and the performance evaluation process.
  • Work with the Nurse Manager and Nurse Leaders to plan, problem-solve, and facilitate daily unit operations.
  • Counsel employees, initiate disciplinary action, communicate actions to administrative nursing management or the director, and participate in follow-up activities.
  • Support recruitment, interviewing, selection, and delegation of staff orientation items.
  • Identify potential staffing problems and notify the Unit Manager or Nursing Supervisor.
  • Inform administrative nursing management, the Director, or Nursing Supervisor of unusual developments involving patients, staff, equipment, policies, or procedures.
  • Carry out employee relations consistently with collective bargaining agreements and hospital policy.
  • Use computer skills to communicate and analyze data.
  • Follow procedures for personal protective equipment, infection control, hazardous-waste disposal, and sharps disposal.
  • Perform efficiently during emergency patient situations according to established policies and procedures.
  • Assist with patient and staff education.
  • Coordinate nursing activities with other units and departments.
  • Use the nursing process of assessment, implementation, planning, and evaluation to direct patient care delivery.
  • Determine daily staffing assignments based on available staff and patient needs in compliance with the Oregon Nurse Practice Act and Oregon Nurse Staffing law.
  • Complete staff scheduling according to staffing plans to ensure adequate staff availability for patient care.
  • Achieve financial targets for the area of responsibility.
  • Provide leadership, direction, and expertise to nursing staff and act as a resource.
  • Provide expertise and leadership in problem-solving processes and tools.
  • Plan and participate in nursing in-services, conferences, and designated meetings.
  • Investigate ways to improve customer service using feedback from patients, families, coworkers, and other departments.
  • Use Hillsboro Medical Center’s quality improvement process to make customer-focused organizational decisions.
  • Respect and advocate for patients’ and significant others’ rights.
  • Develop effective working relationships with healthcare team members, patients, and significant others.
  • Involve unit staff and others in decisions that may affect their jobs, including Unit Based Council participation.
  • Facilitate effective teamwork among employees and departments.
  • Support interpersonal relationships and professional growth.
