Requirements
  • High school or GED graduation is required.
  • Certification by AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA, or ARMA is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required.
  • The role requires the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions generally acquired through high school education and medical assistant programming.
  • Working knowledge of sterile techniques and applicable special procedures is required.
  • Working knowledge of procedures and techniques for administering routine and special patient treatments is required.
  • Working knowledge of sanitation, personal hygiene, basic health and safety precautions, and infection control procedures is required.
  • The ability to document and communicate pertinent information is required.
  • Typing skills and knowledge of medical terminology are required.
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients and clinic staff is required.
  • Heavy lifting and the ability to transport stretcher and wheelchair patients may be required.
Responsibilities
  • Take medical histories and record vital signs.
  • Explain treatment procedures to patients and prepare patients for examinations and procedures.
  • Assist medical and nursing staff during examinations and procedures.
  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens and perform basic laboratory tests in the clinic or office.
  • Perform electrocardiograms, remove sutures and staples, and change sterile and non-sterile dressings.
  • Promote patient and family understanding of educational content and involvement in the plan of care.
  • Document information in patient records.
  • Dispose of contaminated supplies and process instruments, including high-level disinfection and sterilization of medical instruments.
  • Telephone prescriptions to a pharmacy, prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician, and authorize drug refills as directed.
  • Perform other clinical functions delegated and supervised by the physician.
  • Greet patients and answer telephones.
  • Schedule appointments, including arrival appointments in MaestroCare, check out patients, and schedule referrals.
  • Arrange hospital admissions and laboratory services.
  • Update and file patient medical records.
  • Complete insurance forms, handle billing and bookkeeping, receive copayments, and collect account balances.
  • Handle correspondence and order clinical and clerical supplies and forms.
  • Serve as a liaison for clinic activities such as Joint Commission and falls activities and participate in clinic committees when requested.
  • Independently seek out resources and work collaboratively at Levels II and III.
  • Prepare the clinic daily, including registration, scheduling, charge posting, and order entry.
Desired Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program is strongly preferred for Level I.
  • Graduation from a medical assistant program accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES is strongly preferred for Levels II, III, and IV.
