Requirements
  • At least 4 years of commercial underwriting experience, with meaningful exposure to specialty commercial or excess and surplus markets.
  • Experience working at an MGA, MGU, wholesaler, wholesale carrier, program administrator, specialty underwriting platform, or similar organization.
  • Breadth across multiple commercial lines or risk categories, including examples such as general liability, products liability, workers' compensation, professional liability, technology errors and omissions, cyber, commercial property, garage, garagekeepers, commercial auto, excess, umbrella, contractors, habitational, restaurants, staffing, security, healthcare, transportation, manufacturing, and auto services.
  • Ability to work with engineering and product teams, pressure-test system outputs, explain underwriting logic, and help build workflows without needing to write code.
  • Ability to explain underwriting clearly to engineers, salespeople, intake operators, brokers, and founders without relying on jargon.

Responsibilities
  • Review live submissions and system outputs to identify missing context, weak risk summaries, incorrect assumptions, and incomplete exposure analysis.

  • Define the criteria for a complete, market-ready submission across common commercial lines and specialty risks.
  • Build appetite and routing logic across carriers, wholesalers, managing general agents, and specialty markets, including what the company writes, where accounts are routed, and why.
  • Advise intake, sales, placements, engineering, and leadership on what is placeable, what is missing, how to frame risk, and where workflows are breaking.
  • Write playbooks for recurring risk categories and help the team understand how underwriting works in practice.
  • Evaluate risks from both underwriting and broker perspectives, including what the market will care about, how to position the risk, and what happens next.
