Specter | New jet-powered "kamikaze" drone for the US military

Specter | New jet-powered "kamikaze" drone for the US military. Defence Redefined 16/10/2026 AEVEX unveiled its new jet-powered autonomous aircraft, Specter, for the first time at the AUSA 2026 exhibition in Washington. The drone is the latest development from a company that has played a significant role in US military efforts to develop one-way unmanned aerial vehicles. Specifically, AEVEX built the Phoenix Ghost drones that were secretly rushed to Ukraine in 2022. AEVEX describes Specter as a high-speed, low-cost, jet-powered autonomous platform designed for high-risk operational environments. It is being developed around a modular architecture, with ground-launched and air-launched variants. Its interchangeable nose section is intended to accommodate different payloads, including kinetic warheads, electronic warfare equipment, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) systems, and other future capabilities. The company has yet to disclose key performance and technical details, including range, payload capacity, communications architecture, targeting methods or the extent of its autonomous capabilities. Specter is being positioned neither simply as a single-use munition - a kamikaze drone - nor as a high-end unmanned combat aerial vehicle. Instead, AEVEX appears to be pursuing a middle ground: a jet-powered platform capable of conducting one-way attack missions while also supporting intelligence and reconnaissance operations, depending on its configuration. AEVEX is developing Specter with Divergent, an engineering company known for its digital manufacturing processes, specifically its DAPS digital manufacturing platform. The partnership aims to make the drone easier to manufacture at scale while accommodating changes to its design and configuration. The company says Specter's open interfaces and software-defined capabilities are intended to allow the platform to evolve as operational requirements change, rather than being optimised for a single mission. Specter remains under development, with its first flight scheduled for December 2026. AEVEX is pursuing several potential military applications, including the US Army's Family of Affordable Mass Missiles (FAMM) programme and even Rapid Dragon, the new system for launching missiles from transport aircraft. These ambitions indicate the range of applications AEVEX hopes Specter could fulfil, rather than confirming that the aircraft has been selected for any of them.

AEVEX to expand its unmanned aircraft systems portfolio with Specter, a jet-powered, modular autonomous platform.

AEVEX to expand its unmanned aircraft systems portfolio with Specter, a jet-powered, modular autonomous platform. 24 September 2026 AEVEX Corp. (NYSE: AVEX) today announced Specter, a new jet-powered autonomous platform under development to meet emerging mission needs through modular design, open interfaces, and a manufacturing approach built for scale. Developed in collaboration with advanced manufacturing company, Divergent, Specter will advance AEVEX's leading unmanned systems portfolio with a high-speed, turbojet-powered one-way attack platform built for demanding operational environments. Designed for contested environments and extended mission profiles, Specter's modular airframe architecture and software-defined capability are intended to support a wide range of payload types and mission effects. The platform will incorporate a turbojet propulsion architecture, enabling both ground-launched and air-launched variants while maintaining flexibility for future mission expansion. Specter features a modular, swappable nose section designed to accommodate kinetic, non-kinetic, electronic warfare, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and future payloads. Its architecture is engineered to enable rapid integration of new technologies without requiring a full system redesign, supporting responsiveness as mission requirements evolve. AEVEX is drawing on its extensive experience designing, producing, and fielding high-volume unmanned systems to shape Specter's development approach. Lessons from thousands of operational deployments, rapid iteration cycles, and the company's CompassX autonomy architecture have informed the platform's software-driven, adaptable design philosophy. The program also leverages AEVEX's recently announced collaboration with Divergent Technologies. Divergent's digital manufacturing platform, DAPS(TM), is being incorporated into Specter's development to support modern, resilient, and scalable production, enabling rapid iteration and manufacturability considerations from the earliest engineering stages. "Specter reflects our lessons learned on capability from delivering thousands of autonomous systems in theater," said Manan Patel, Chief Technology Officer at AEVEX. "We are not optimizing for a fixed requirement, we are building an architecture that adapts. Specter is designed to evolve with mission demands, payload technologies, and manufacturing advances over time." About AEVEX AEVEX Corp. (NYSE: AVEX) is a leading U.S. defense technology company delivering autonomous unmanned systems, AI-enabled mission software, and advanced ISR and electronic warfare solutions for national security customers. With vertically integrated engineering, rapid prototyping, and high-volume manufacturing across multiple U.S. locations, AEVEX provides affordable, front-line-ready capabilities designed for contested and GPS-denied environments. AEVEX's mission is to strengthen deterrence, enhance warfighter effectiveness, and help ensure the United States maintains technological and industrial advantage in the era of autonomy. AEVEX expands Florida and Virginia facilities to scale autonomous systems production.

AEVEX expands Florida and Virginia facilities to scale autonomous systems production. * 10 September 2026 * Edited By: Ed Freeman AEVEX Corp., a leading US defense technology company delivering autonomous unmanned systems, AI-enabled mission software, and advanced ISR and EW solutions, today announced expansions of its corporate footprint in Florida and Virginia to meet growing production demand and to enhance collaboration with US government customers and industry partners. (Credit: AEVEX) The investments expand AEVEX's manufacturing capacity and customer-facing infrastructure to support AEVEX's rapid scaling and to meet increasing demand for battle-proven autonomous systems. "Customers are increasingly looking for proven autonomous systems that can be delivered at scale and on shorter operational timelines," said Roger Wells, Chief Executive Officer of AEVEX. "We are investing to stay ahead of that demand - expanding our production capacity, putting our teams closer to the customer, and building the infrastructure needed to execute as the market continues to grow." In Florida, AEVEX is significantly expanding and consolidating its Tampa manufacturing operations to support rising production requirements and establish additional capacity for future growth. The investment is expected to more than double production capacity over the next year while providing greater operational flexibility to respond to customer demand. Tampa's position within a major US defense and national security hub enhances AEVEX's proximity to key customers, partners, and mission stakeholders. The new footprint will include a large-scale ecosystem designed for high-volume production, dedicated space for AEVEX's expanding additive manufacturing and Uncrewed Surface Vehicle (USV) operations, and increased capacity for manufacturing, engineering, technical, and program personnel. "Scaling production is about more than just adding space - it is about creating the operational capacity and customer proximity to move quickly as mission requirements evolve," said Murali Krishnan, Chief Growth Officer at AEVEX. "The Tampa expansion gives us greater flexibility to increase throughput, work closely with customers, and deliver mission-ready systems at the speed and volume they require." AEVEX has also secured new dedicated office space in Arlington, Virginia, establishing an expanded hub for close collaboration with US government customers, defense partners, and other national security stakeholders. The location will support teams working across unmanned systems programs, autonomy integration, engineering, program execution, and customer engagement, enabling tighter coordination as mission requirements evolve and new programs move from development to fielding. "Proximity to the customer is critical to how we operate," said Krishnan. "The Virginia office will allow our teams to collaborate more closely with customers, better understand evolving mission requirements, and move quickly to deliver the capabilities they need." The Florida and Virginia investments form part of AEVEX's broader strategy to increase manufacturing throughput and build the infrastructure required to support continued growth across its autonomous systems business.
