  • A high school diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.
  • A Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) credential is required.
  • Certification by one of the listed governing associations is required: NHA, AMT, AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, AAH, or AMCA.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required within six months.
  • At least one year of related work experience is preferred.
  • An accredited one-year certificate or two-year diploma Medical Assistant program is preferred.
Responsibilities
  • Obtain and document the patient's reason for visit, weight, vital signs, visit screening information, medication review, and pertinent information for the provider using the electronic medical record rooming tool.
  • Set up examination and treatment rooms between cases.
  • Assist patients as needed to prepare for provider visits while ensuring their safety and privacy.
  • Provide direct patient care as directed by the provider and within competency and clinic needs, including performing electrocardiograms and wound dressings, and supporting the provider during minor surgical procedures and ancillary examinations.
  • Prepare and administer medications according to policy and procedure after validating knowledge and competency; intravenous medications may not be administered.
  • Complete patient tests and treatments as ordered by the provider and according to policy and procedure after validating knowledge and competency.
  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens and complete associated paperwork accurately and efficiently.
  • Perform phlebotomy and assist with specific laboratory functions related to testing, reporting, and quality assurance of laboratory specimens, as educated and overseen by the laboratory.
  • Perform receptionist and clerical duties that support patient care and clinic operations, including matching and filing ancillary department reports, consultations, and other medical reports in patient records.
  • Document in appropriate sections to create complete and accurate medical records.
  • Use the electronic medical record and scheduling system as designated.
  • Facilitate timely patient appointments and complete referrals and pre-authorizations as needed.
  • Collect co-payments.
  • Assist with orientation of new personnel under the direction of the provider and/or site lead.
  • Execute and document ongoing patient communication as directed by the provider, prioritize communications to the provider, and respond to patient questions and requests to support efficient provider time and timely patient responses.
  • Reinforce patient education as directed by the provider to support patient understanding of instructions.
  • Inventory non-controlled medical and surgical supplies and pharmaceuticals as needed to maintain adequate supply levels, verify expiration dates, document utilization, and optimize organizational efficiency and space utilization.
  • Access non-controlled medication storage and supply areas and transport non-controlled medications as needed to meet clinic or unit needs.
  • Prepare and clean instruments.
  • Follow sterilization and disinfection protocols, including high-level disinfection of instruments and equipment.
  • Clean and set up examination rooms between patients using established infection prevention protocols.
  • Follow hand hygiene and appropriate infection prevention precautions.
  • Routinely inspect and observe diagnostic equipment and instrumentation to ensure proper operation and identify preventive or corrective maintenance needs.
  • Actively participate in patient safety and quality improvement programs.
  • Travel as required.
