Requirements
  • Less than high school education, with demonstrated ability to read, write, and follow directions, plus training in cooking, nutrition, and health protection in food handling and one year of experience as a cook.
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training may be considered for current Nueces County employees only.
  • Employees who drive a vehicle on official business must have a driving record that meets County and insurance-carrier standards.
  • A Food Handler's Certificate from the Texas Department of State Health Services or the American National Standard Institute - Conference for Food Protection is required; it may be acquired within the first month of hire.
  • A Food Manager’s Certificate from the Texas Department of State Health Services or the American National Standard Institute - Conference for Food Protection must be obtained within six months of employment.
  • A valid Texas Motor Vehicle Operator's License is required.
  • Ability to read and follow recipes and follow oral and written instructions when preparing food items.
  • Ability to cook for a large group of people.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; write simple correspondence; and present information effectively in one-on-one and small-group situations.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, and compute rates, ratios, and percentages.
  • Ability to follow detailed but uncomplicated written or oral instructions and address problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the role, including regularly lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare nutritious meals according to established menus for congregate and home-bound Senior Community Service participants.
  • Maintain the kitchen area, equipment, and utensils safely and cleanly in accordance with health regulations.
  • Maintain adequate inventory of food and staples.
  • Assist with packaging and delivering meals to other centers and to homebound senior citizens.
  • Maintain a clean personal appearance and wash hands frequently during food preparation and cleanup.
  • Supervise Community Service participants and/or government program participants who assist with food preparation, dishwashing, and cleaning tables, floors, and kitchen equipment.
  • Serve food to congregate meal participants.
  • Clean up after meals and clean the dining area.
  • Collect supplies for the center from the Food Bank once each month.
  • Assist with cleaning, striping, and waxing the center’s floors annually or as needed.
  • Assign and review work of participants assigned to the kitchen from the Community Services Program and federal/state employment programs.
  • Be on duty before, during, and after natural disasters and emergencies, as directed by the Department Head.
