Requirements
  • Must be comfortable and adaptable to working with children and youth.
  • Must have a strong work ethic and 2–3 years of work experience with school-aged children under 13 years of age.
  • Must have an associate’s degree in child development, elementary education, or a related field, or two years of college with 18 credits in a related field, or a School-Age Child Care credential, and one year in a supervisory capacity.
  • Must receive at least 15 hours of in-service training on specified subjects during the first year of operation and 30 hours of in-service training every two years thereafter.
  • Must have First Aid and CPR training or be willing to attain the training to meet requirements.
Responsibilities
  • Attend all required training sessions and classes, including staff and parent meetings.
  • Assist the GAINS Director.
  • Supervise the daily safety and activities of participants and supervise youth counselors assigned to work with them.
  • Plan or follow the daily activities scheduled for participants, lead participants to and from activity areas and field trips, and teach and supervise organized games and activities.
  • Supervise SYEP participants, group leaders, and program aides.
  • Interact with city and state agencies to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Assist in developing the daily program schedule.
  • Assist in overseeing matters related to the summer program.
  • Assist in maintaining campers’ records so they are up to date and available for inspections.
  • Assist in managing online attendance.
  • Teach and discipline children according to child care regulations and involve students in developing and implementing activities.
  • Assist with student performances.
  • Assist with preparing and distributing snacks and meals.
  • Plan and implement active and diverse gym programs.
  • Follow and implement the curriculum provided by the program.
  • Assist with general cleaning of program areas.
