Requirements
- Graduate of a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education-accredited nursing program with a Master’s Degree in Nursing, for the nurse practitioner pathway.
- National certification by one of the recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse certification centers, for the nurse practitioner pathway.
- Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia, for the nurse practitioner pathway.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification is required, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department’s discretion.
- A bachelor’s degree or master’s degree as a Physician Assistant is required, for the physician assistant pathway.
- Graduate of an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant-approved Physician Assistant training program is required.
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants is required.
- Licensure or eligibility for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine or West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine is required.
- Proficiency with computers.
- Ability to perform heavy or hard work, including lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, positioning patients, standing, walking, and carrying patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
- Ability to work closely with others, during protracted or irregular hours, around biohazards and infectious diseases, with or near the deceased, with hands in water, and near electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment.
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians, ancillary services, nursing staff, hospital staff, students, and the community.
- Ability to complete all identified clinical competencies and comply with approved hospital policies, documentation standards, and performance expectations.
Responsibilities
- Manage comprehensive and individualized care for patients and families in the infusion center and ambulatory setting.
- Complete daily rounds, consultations, pre-treatment or pre-procedure evaluations in the infusion center, ambulatory clinic participation, and inpatient patient care.
- Complete integrated assessments and comprehensive clinical evaluations, and document findings in the medical record.
- Order additional tests or consultations in collaboration with hematology/oncology faculty or according to established clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Perform diagnostic tests and communicate their results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
- Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal patient findings.
- Facilitate patient discharge and follow-up by ordering and coordinating services and tests needed for outpatient clinic follow-up.
- Perform necessary procedures according to established clinical guidelines, protocols, and scope of practice.
- Develop individualized plans of care for hematology/oncology patients, including acute management, teaching, discharge planning, and referrals.
- Participate in physician rounds when applicable.
- Identify unstable or complex hematology/oncology care situations and facilitate appropriate intervention in the infusion center, clinic, or hospital.
- Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
- Evaluate hematology/oncology patients and direct follow-up procedures and tests in the ambulatory setting.
- Assist with collection of outcome measures.
- Apply critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning to clinical decision-making and management of individual patient and family needs.
- Use equipment safely.
- Base decisions and actions on scientific principles, established standards of care, and research findings.
- Provide education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community using appropriate teaching and learning strategies.
- Promote an environment that supports learning by responding to patient and family preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of patient and family teaching and collaborate with nursing and clinical staff to complete education plans.
- Update professional knowledge throughout the year.
- Serve as a resource for staff caring for hematology/oncology patients.
- Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel in the area of expertise.
- Mentor nursing personnel at all levels of clinical practice.
- Participate in community programs and distribute literature as appropriate to the area of expertise.
- Document the plan of care, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely in the patient’s medical record for every visit.
- Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve patient outcome-based improvements in care.
- Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in hematology/oncology practice that improve patient outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to solve problems and provide professional support.
- Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education, and serve as a professional role model.
- Promote and practice innovation in the expanded role of care delivery to hematology/oncology patients and families in infusion, inpatient, and ambulatory settings.
- Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
- Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
- Participate in the WVUH/UHA Performance Improvement Plan and apply its findings to improve patient care.
- Review and interpret hematology/oncology data from patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes.
- Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
- Assist faculty, administrators, and directors in collecting outcome measures.
- Oversee and provide comprehensive individualized care for patients evaluated and managed in the infusion center within the scope of practice.
- Provide direct supervision of patients in the infusion center until the last patient receiving an infusion leaves.
Desired Qualifications
- Hematology/oncology, acute care, or internal medicine experience is preferred.
- Eligible new graduates will be considered.
- Oncology Certified Nurse or Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse certification is preferred.
- A master’s-level degree as a Physician Assistant is preferred.
