Requirements
  • Three to seven years of experience in general engineering construction.
  • A bachelor's degree in Construction, Engineering, or Construction Management, or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and remain self-motivated.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for interfacing with owner representatives, engineering firms, subcontractors, team members, and senior management.
  • Competence with computer software applications, including HCSS Heavy Bid or similar estimating programs, AGTEK or similar earthwork programs, Bluebeam, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel.
  • Knowledge of Primavera P6 Scheduling.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to review technical issues and address them with timely solutions.
  • Time management, multitasking, and prioritization skills.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare designated bid tasks, cost estimates, and proposals assigned by the Office Chief Estimator or Senior Estimator leading the bid.
  • Analyze plans, specifications, and related engineering documents.
  • Study measurement and payment terms, schedules, milestones, permitting requirements, and related bid requirements.
  • Follow Ames Estimating Manual protocols and procedures.
  • Prepare computer-aided quantity takeoffs, verify site conditions, and review construction methods and equipment utilization.
  • Prepare timely, thorough, and accurate quantity takeoffs.
  • Assist with preparing bid documents and developing bid construction schedules.
  • Assist with soliciting material suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Compute production-based costs using HCSS Heavy Bid estimating software.
  • Assist with preparing quality proposals for office pursuits.
  • Consult with vendors and subcontractors to clarify their scopes of services.
  • Compare and analyze subcontractor and material supplier quotes for scope coverage.
  • Review and understand contractual requirements for assigned scopes of work.
  • Assist with proposal clarifications, inclusions, and exclusions for self-performed work and work performed by suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Attend pre-bid site visits and investigations.
  • Ensure and demonstrate cost certainty for assigned pricing items.
  • Identify risks and opportunities for assigned pricing items through risk management.
  • Assist with closing estimates.
  • Provide support and transition successful projects to Operations.
  • Prioritize and promote safety.
  • Promote Ames and identify additional project opportunities.
  • Assist with recruiting and developing the estimating team.
  • Follow operating procedures within estimates to win work.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with clients, communities, and partners.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Meet assigned task deadlines.
  • Develop progressively greater understanding and responsibility in estimating across multiple work types, including earthwork, underground pipe, and concrete.
  • Use the HCSS Heavy Bid crew database to price work and modify existing crews only as needed.
  • Price assigned work items with sufficient activities and detail to demonstrate reasonable cost certainty.
  • Avoid adding, modifying, or changing equipment pieces, equipment rates, or labor rates without permission from the Chief Estimator.
  • Review publications for potential projects to bid as assigned.
  • Present potential bid-opportunity leads to the Office Chief Estimator.
  • Work additional hours as required to complete bids and estimates by deadlines.
  • Travel to project locations and area offices as needed.
