Responsibilities
  • Provide anesthetic care for all types of patients and procedures in cooperation with the supervising or medically directing physician and in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
  • Administer anesthesia to patients undergoing surgery or procedures and provide continuous vigilant observation of patients’ physical reactions to sedatives, analgesics, and anesthetic agents; inform the surgeon or anesthesiologist of adverse conditions that may threaten patient safety or care.
  • Maintain patient safety at all times.
  • Maintain excellence in airway management and be familiar with airway adjuncts, including Bullard, fiberoptic scopes, and ILMA.
  • Work within the scope of delineated clinical privileges.
  • Take appropriate precautions to minimize infection risks for patients and other healthcare professionals.
  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality of patient information.
  • Participate in pre-anesthetic patient evaluations and selection of anesthetic agents and techniques.
  • Perform techniques in the anesthetic plan, including insertion of intravenous and invasive monitoring catheters according to protocol, endotracheal intubation and extubation, and arterial punctures for interpretation of arterial blood gases.
  • Monitor the patient’s physical response to anesthesia and inform the surgeon and/or anesthesiologist of adverse conditions; manage induction, maintenance, and emergence for general, regional, and monitored anesthesia cases; recognize abnormal responses to anesthesia, adjunctive medications, or therapy and initiate corrective measures; determine the need for additional laboratory tests, provide resuscitative care as necessary, and evaluate and manage patients in the immediate postoperative period.
  • Administer intravenous fluids in consideration of the patient’s medical history and surgical procedure. Administer blood products after obtaining a hematocrit and consulting with the surgeon and/or anesthesiologist.
  • Document patient status appropriately in the anesthesia record.
  • Perform required safety and performance checks on anesthesia-related equipment and verify supplies before initiating care. Procure and assemble equipment and supplies when an anesthesia technician is unavailable.
  • Review documentation for informed consent and identify the appropriate surgical site during SBAR with the circulating and holding-room registered nurses. Participate in the operating-room surgical pause with the surgical team in accordance with departmental and regulatory compliance standards.
  • Communicate appropriately with all individuals involved in perioperative and postoperative patient care.
  • Provide anesthesia care responsibly in the absence of an anesthesiologist during a life-threatening emergency.
  • Assist with teaching and evaluating newly hired CRNAs, GRNAs, and SRNAs in the clinical area.
  • Assume responsibility for and accountability for controlled substances according to department and hospital policy and state and federal guidelines.
  • Maintain professionalism.
  • Work in close contact with individuals with infectious diseases and toxic, harmful, or potentially hazardous compounds, solutions, and medications.
  • Observe standardized guidelines to guard against disease and hazards, including radiation, accidental needle sticks, sterilizing chemicals, and anesthetics; may be vulnerable to back injury when moving patients.
