About the job
- Graduate of an accredited hospital-based program, college, or university recognized by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board.
- At least three months of clinical and on-the-job training.
- Obtain registration from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Nuclear Medicine or Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board within six months of hire.
- Obtain Basic Life Support certification within two months of the hire date.
- Demonstrate human relations skills with patients, physicians, and others in difficult or sensitive situations, including verbal and written communication, problem solving, and assertiveness.
- Maintain sustained alertness and concentration for interactive, repetitive, small-detail, and computer-based work.
- Stand and walk considerably, lift lightweight objects up to 20 pounds, and assist with lifting and moving patients.
- Complete Department of Transportation hazardous-materials training within 90 days of employment and every three years thereafter, including awareness, function-specific, safety, security, and testing components.
- Perform nuclear medicine scans to assist physicians in diagnosing and treating medical disorders.
- Prepare and administer radioactive materials under the direction of a radiologist.
- Receive, prepare, and return radiopharmaceuticals according to policies and workflow protocols.
- Communicate with hospital personnel about scheduling and procedures, and ensure patient care and radiation safety, including pediatric and pregnancy screening.
- Calibrate and operate dose calibrators, Geiger counters, and other nuclear medicine equipment.
- Administer or assist with administering radiopharmaceuticals orally or intravenously under the radiologist's direction.
- Consult radiologists to clarify orders or discuss unusual situations.
- Operate gamma cameras and perform daily, weekly, and monthly quality-control checks.
- Report equipment malfunctions and required adjustments or repairs immediately.
- Maintain records of biohazardous and nuclear waste disposal and dispose of waste according to Nuclear Regulatory Commission requirements.
- Respond immediately and follow proper procedures for major or minor radioactive-material spills.
- Work under the supervision and direction of the Imaging Medical Director.
- Follow guidance from Medical Physics and Radiation Safety and comply with applicable federal and state regulations, including 10 CFR Part 30, 10 CFR Part 71, Department of Transportation regulations, Michigan Department of Community Health, Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, and hazardous-materials regulations.
- Follow the Bronson Hospital Nuclear Radiation Safety Manual.
