What believers are saying

  • Saft and Mana Battery began 2025 evaluation and signed a JDA in August 2026.
  • Naval Group awarded Saft a major submarine-battery contract on July 20, 2026.
  • Saft’s new identity and TotalEnergies backing signal continued investment in batteries.

What critics are saying

  • The Coast Guard recompetition threatens Saft America’s aircraft-battery incumbent position in 2026.
  • Saft still depends on TotalEnergies capital allocation, not standalone funding.
  • If sodium-ion and solid-state slip, Saft stays trapped in commoditized industrial batteries.

What makes Saft unique

  • Saft owns cell design, prototyping, manufacturing, testing, and qualification in-house.
  • On August 3, 2026, Saft and Mana Battery targeted anode-free sodium-ion cells.
  • Naval Group chose Saft on July 20, 2026 for Barracuda and Scorpene submarines.

Mana Battery and Saft partner to develop anode-free sodium-ion batteries for defense and aerospace

Mana Battery and Saft have signed a joint development agreement to commercialise anode-free sodium-ion battery technology. The partnership combines Mana Battery's electrolyte platform with Saft's manufacturing expertise to target defence, aerospace, rail, datacentre and industrial uninterruptible power supply markets. Anode-free sodium-ion cells assemble without anode active material, with the sodium anode forming during initial operation. This delivers higher energy density than conventional sodium-ion designs whilst using abundant, low-cost materials free from lithium, cobalt and nickel supply constraints. The technology offers wide temperature performance, strong safety characteristics and extended charge retention. Saft, a TotalEnergies subsidiary, brings decades of experience qualifying cells for demanding industrial and mission-critical applications.
