Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least one year of experience as a laborer or in a similar field such as utility maintenance.
  • A current and valid, non-restricted driver's license.
  • Availability to work evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, standby, overtime, and during inclement weather when required.
  • Ability to wear and maintain required personal protective equipment in designated risk areas.
  • Ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License instruction permit within six months of employment and a Class A Commercial Driver's License with air brake endorsement within nine months if not already possessing a CDL.
  • Ability to pass mandatory drug testing.
  • Ability to lift approximately 50 pounds without assistance.
  • Ability to occasionally work in confined spaces.
Responsibilities
  • Perform manual labor, including hand excavation and heavy lifting, to maintain and repair residential and commercial water meters.
  • Use basic hand tools and associated equipment for maintenance and manual labor tasks.
  • Follow oral and written instructions and safety precautions for construction work.
  • Use an iPad to complete work assignments in an automated work order system.
  • Operate motor vehicles and small construction equipment.
  • Maintain personal protective equipment.
  • Assist with routine scheduled and emergency repairs and maintenance of water meters.
  • Communicate issues clearly and effectively to senior employees and supervisors.
  • Respond to verbal customer inquiries as necessary.
  • Support coworkers within the Meter Operations Bureau and Public Utilities Operations Division.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the supervisor based on workload and department needs.

  • Knowledge and experience in utility construction.
  • Experience working with water meters.
  • Experience working with hand tools such as picks, shovels, and wrenches.
  • Knowledge and experience using an iPad and/or laptop with an automated work order system.
  • Experience working with others in a team environment.
  • Experience working outside in extreme weather conditions.
