About the job

Requirements
  • A graduate degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in biological or biochemical science is required; a Ph.D. is strongly preferred.
  • Be a registered U.S. Patent Attorney and a member of at least one U.S. State Bar, and/or be a qualified European Patent Attorney having passed the EQE or hold an equivalent qualification in the relevant jurisdiction.
  • Have a minimum of 3–5 years of patent law experience gained in-house at a biopharmaceutical or biotechnology company and/or at a law firm with a life sciences practice.
  • Have hands-on experience handling complex biologics intellectual property matters, including therapeutic biological molecules such as monoclonal antibodies, multi-specific antibodies, NNANOBODY® molecules, peptides, nucleic acids, cytokines, and/or enzymes.
  • Be able to independently manage patent application preparation and prosecution from drafting through grant.
  • Demonstrate the ability to convey complex intellectual property concepts clearly to legal and non-legal audiences in writing and orally.
  • Be able to work effectively within a global, cross-functional team and build relationships across geographies and disciplines.
  • Demonstrate artificial intelligence fluency in a legal or technical professional context, including hands-on use of artificial intelligence tools for patent drafting, prosecution, or intellectual property analysis.
  • Be able to critically assess, verify, and challenge artificial intelligence-assisted work products, including identifying errors, hallucinations, or analytical gaps in generated responses, claim drafts, or prior art analyses.
  • Be comfortable adopting, evaluating, and integrating emerging artificial intelligence tools into daily practice in a technology-forward work environment.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare, draft, file, and prosecute U.S., EPO, and foreign patent applications across biotechnology and biologics areas.
  • Interact regularly with internal clients, including Research & Development, Project Management, Business Development, Franchise, CMC, and Industrial Affairs in the U.S. and Europe, providing proactive intellectual property counseling and soliciting invention disclosures.
  • Advise clients proactively on intellectual property strategy aligned with business objectives, including portfolio positioning and competitive landscape, preferably using artificial-intelligence-enhanced portfolio analytics, competitive intelligence, and predictive modeling, and translate complex data into actionable business recommendations.
  • Provide patentability evaluations of intellectual property related to internal research programs and external business development opportunities.
  • Conduct, direct, and analyze patent searches; render written opinions on validity, non-infringement, and freedom-to-operate or design-around of third-party patents.
  • Initiate, defend, and manage post-issuance proceedings, including U.S. Inter Partes Review (IPR), Post-Grant Review (PGR), EPO Oppositions, and patent litigation support.
  • Review proposed research papers and other publications for potential impact on Sanofi's existing patent estate.
  • Participate in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating agreements covering intellectual property rights, including licenses, CDAs, and collaboration agreements.
  • Use artificial intelligence tools strategically across the patent lifecycle, including AI-assisted drafting, claim analysis, prior art searching, office action response preparation, and portfolio analytics, while maintaining critical oversight, professional judgment, and work-product quality control.
  • Critically review and validate all artificial-intelligence-generated work products for technical accuracy, legal soundness, strategic alignment, and freedom from hallucinations or analytical errors before client delivery or filing.
  • Direct artificial-intelligence-assisted workflows for patent prosecution streams, configuring tools to execute within defined strategic parameters while maintaining appropriate human oversight for privilege, risk management, and client accountability.
  • Develop custom artificial intelligence tools and workflows for emerging needs in patent prosecution, intellectual property strategy, or portfolio management, including prompt engineering, automation of routine analysis, and bespoke intelligence tools such as examiner behavior analysis and art unit trend mapping, without waiting for vendor or IT solutions.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify opportunities for artificial intelligence augmentation of intellectual property processes, pilot new capabilities, and share responsible and effective integration practices across the Global IP organization.
  • Maintain professional accountability and licensed judgment as the human decision-maker in artificial-intelligence-augmented work, ensuring AI supports strategic thinking rather than substitutes for legal expertise or client counseling.
  • Serve as a thought leader within the Global IP team on responsible artificial intelligence adoption, sharing insights on effective integration, emerging risks, and evolving best practices for AI-augmented patent practice.
  • Develop and maintain an effective professional network within Sanofi's Biologics Business Units and Global IP group.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Ph.D. in biological or biochemical science.
  • Experience managing EPO Oppositions, U.S. IPR/PGR proceedings, and/or patent litigation.
  • Prior in-house experience at a biotechnology or biopharmaceutical company.
  • Familiarity with French, German, and/or Dutch (Flemish).
  • Experience with intellectual property aspects of licensing, mergers and acquisitions due diligence, or business development transactions.
  • Experience with biologics platform technologies, including antibody formats, gene therapy, bioprocesses, formulations, and/or drug-device combinations.
  • Foundational knowledge of chemistry as it relates to biologics and biochemistry.
  • Ability to orchestrate and direct AI-assisted workflows across concurrent prosecution streams, including configuring AI tools within a defined strategic framework while maintaining human oversight and privilege considerations, and managing AI agents and human collaborators to deliver high-quality IP outcomes at scale while adapting to unexpected developments.
  • Experience or demonstrated aptitude in building or customizing lightweight AI tools or workflows, such as prompt engineering, no-code/low-code automation, or custom GPT configurations, to address gaps in patent prosecution or IP analysis workflows without relying on IT or vendor support.

Enable Injections wins first Japan approval for enFuse on-body injector via Sanofi's CirCLIQ

Enable Injections has won its first commercial product approval in Japan. The country's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare approved the company's enFuse On-Body Delivery System through Sanofi's CirCLIQ Injector. The device delivers a subcutaneous form of Sarclisa (isatuximab) with the push of a button, for treating multiple myeloma. It is the first anticancer treatment given through an on-body injector in Japan. The approval follows recent clearances in the US and Europe. Japan approved Sarclisa SC in June 2026, backed by the IRAKLIA phase 3 study, which showed the subcutaneous form was non-inferior to intravenous delivery. "We're proud to partner with Sanofi to bring our enFuse technology to patients in Japan," said Michael D. Hooven, chairman and chief executive officer of Enable.

Sanofi, Regeneron expand alliance in up to $8B deal for immunology drugs

France's Sanofi and US-based Regeneron Pharmaceuticals will expand their 20-year partnership to jointly develop and market immunology medicines in a deal worth up to $8 billion. Regeneron will receive $1 billion upfront, with potential additional payments of up to $7 billion tied to development, regulatory, and commercial targets. The collaboration will add four next-generation immunology drug candidates invented by Regeneron, with one currently in early-stage trials for eczema. The companies will equally share development costs and future profits from new drugs, whilst their existing profit-sharing agreement for top-selling medicine Dupixent remains unchanged. The deal settles prior litigation between the companies and marks an early move by Sanofi's new chief executive Belen Garijo to strengthen the company's pipeline.
