Requirements
  • Graduation from a specialty training program is required.
  • At least three years of related work experience is required.
  • Maintain Pennsylvania Department of Health medical command status.
  • Acquire the Certified Flight Paramedic credential within one year of hire if not previously certified.
  • Maintain required Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Basic Life Support, Certified Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic, Certified Flight Paramedic, Neonatal Resuscitation Program, and S.T.A.B.L.E. certifications.
  • Maintain competency in the knowledge and psychomotor skills required for the role.
  • Maintain competency in the use and routine maintenance of Life Flight equipment and supplies.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
  • Employee weight may not exceed 250 pounds in flight gear.
  • Work safely around aircraft, including exposure to infectious diseases, chemical toxins, noise, vibration, jet fumes, extreme temperatures, gases, odors, dust particles, and mechanical or electrical hazards.
Responsibilities
  • Provide critical care transport paramedic-level care until patient care is relinquished to an accepting medical facility.
  • Provide care within the paramedic scope of practice as defined by a medical command physician, written regional protocols, and Pennsylvania Department of Health EMS Act 37.
  • Document patient care thoroughly in the electronic medical record.
  • Communicate educational needs to the Chief Flight Nurse, regional supervisors, medical director CEPs, and Life Flight educator.
  • Function as a critical care flight and critical care transport paramedic with an expanded scope of practice approved by the Life Flight Medical Director and Pennsylvania Department of Health.
  • Function in a non-essential per diem role in emergency departments to the level permitted by the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
  • Assure cleanliness, organization, and proper equipping of the medical interior of Life Flight helicopters.
  • Assure adequate inventory of supplies and equipment at each Life Flight base site.
  • Maintain an orderly environment and clean helipads at all hangar locations.
  • Function as a flight crew member and assist the pilot as needed.
  • Comply with safety standards during all phases of flight.
  • Participate in preflight briefings and post-flight debriefings.
  • Act as a preceptor and participate in the orientation of new employees and students as assigned.
  • Assist in conducting safety briefings as needed.
  • Maintain awareness of current paramedic issues through professional activities.
  • Participate in Life Flight educational requirements needed to maintain active status.
  • Identify processes or systems that could potentially lead to errors and adverse events.
  • Participate in required patient-safety education programs and activities designed to improve departmental and organizational patient safety.
