About the job

Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, Data Science, or a related field is required.
  • At least 8 years of experience in technology, including at least 3 years managing teams in a research, innovation, product, or advanced engineering function.
  • Demonstrated experience taking new technology concepts from idea through proof of concept to production adoption.
  • Practical, current knowledge of the AI landscape, including large language models, agentic systems, and machine learning operations.
  • Experience establishing governance for exploratory work, including stage gating and portfolio-level decision making.
  • A track record of engaging executive stakeholders and securing sponsorship for speculative investment.
  • Comply with POPIA when handling personal and special personal information, including member health information, and with the Cybercrimes Act; report suspected unlawful access or compromise without delay.
  • Adhere to Kaelo information security policies and aligned frameworks, including FSCA Joint Standard 2 of 2024, ISO/IEC 27001, the CIS Controls, and the NIST Cybersecurity Framework.
  • Maintain evidence required to support the ISMS and internal, external, and certification audits within the area of responsibility.
  • Escalate security incidents, control weaknesses, and operational risks promptly, and complete mandatory compliance and awareness training.
Responsibilities
  • Manage the Innovation Hub, implement the IT Executive's direction, prioritize initiatives, establish ways of working, and foster disciplined experimentation where early stopping is treated as productive.
  • Build and manage the team from a largely greenfield base, and develop and retain scarce AI, analysis, and design skills.
  • Delegate technical ownership appropriately and empower the AI Architect to set reference architecture and engineering standards.
  • Set objectives; manage performance, departmental budget, capacity, partners, and vendors.
  • Develop and maintain the Hub's standard operating procedures, including stage-gate, experimentation, and handover procedures.
  • Operationalize and enforce Kaelo's policies within the department, including responsible AI, information security, and data protection policies, and address non-compliance.
  • Translate the AI and innovation strategy set by the IT Executive into a sequenced portfolio balancing near-term return with longer-horizon capability.
  • Run stage-gated governance through the Project Manager so initiatives are funded incrementally and stopped when evidence does not support them.
  • Horizon-scan emerging technology, particularly artificial intelligence, and assess its applicability to health insurance and financial services.
  • Report portfolio progress, learning, and realized benefit to the IT Executive and business leadership.
  • Engage business and executive stakeholders to identify opportunities with commercial or member value.
  • Ensure every initiative has a framed use case, value hypothesis, success criteria, and measurement approach before build effort is committed.
  • Ensure realized benefit is measured after solutions reach production.
  • Build relationships with external partners, vendors, start-ups, and academic institutions where they accelerate capability.
  • Establish responsible AI practices covering fairness, bias, explainability, human oversight, data provenance, and model risk.
  • Ensure member or production data used in experimentation is governed, minimized, anonymized where possible, and formally approved under POPIA.
  • Assess and manage third-party and model supply chain risk from AI vendors and foundation model providers.
  • Ensure security requirements are considered from the outset in partnership with the Security Engineer.
  • Agree with the Systems Solutions Manager on acceptance criteria and responsibility boundaries for solutions entering production.
  • Ensure graduating solutions include the documentation, test coverage, observability, and operational runbooks required for production acceptance.
  • Plan and resource productionization work jointly with Systems Solutions.
  • Act as a trusted business partner, build demand for the Hub's work, and set realistic expectations about AI capabilities.
  • Identify, record, and escalate delivery, ethical, regulatory, and vendor risks.
  • Maintain records that evidence governance of the innovation portfolio to internal audit and regulators.
  • Align the department's work with and execute the direction and strategy set by the IT Executive.
  • Communicate progress to the IT Executive and promptly and transparently escalate issues, risks, and decisions requiring direction.
Desired Qualifications
  • A postgraduate qualification or formal training in artificial intelligence, product management, or innovation management is advantageous.
  • Experience in financial services, health insurance, medical schemes, or health technology.
  • Experience implementing responsible AI or model risk governance frameworks.
  • Experience managing partnerships with technology vendors, start-ups, or academic institutions.

About the company

Kaelo makes integrated luxury beverage coolers built into surfaces like kitchen islands or bars for homes and premium spaces. Its Kryolux dry-cooling system creates a jacket of cold air around the bottle, chilling quickly without ice or water and keeping a beverage within 1–2 degrees of its opening, while using less power than a 60-watt bulb. The unit is operated by a smart-touch crown, includes ambient lighting with 27 color options, and is hand-built in the Cotswolds with crowns machined from solid stainless steel in various finishes. Kaelo sells mainly through premium kitchen dealers and aims to grow globally in luxury kitchens and marine environments, distinguishing itself by seamless surface integration as a social appliance and its dry-cooling technology.

What believers are saying

  • KBBG added Kaelo in May 2026, expanding premium dealer reach across the UK.
  • Kaelo launched U-Chill, U-Chill Plus, and undercounter fridges in 2026.
  • Portable Host and outdoor integration broaden use cases beyond static kitchen installations.

What critics are saying

  • Kaelo still sells a narrow premium niche, exposing it to design-cycle demand swings.
  • High-end kitchen dealer dependence slows growth if installers favor integrated rivals like Carysil.
  • Niche appliance businesses die when a cheaper brand copies the form factor faster.

What makes Kaelo unique

  • Patented Kryolux dry-cooling keeps open bottles chilled without ice or water.
  • Kaelo Host adds portable indoor-outdoor use while preserving built-in integration.
  • Hand-built Cotswolds manufacturing and premium kitchen dealer distribution reinforce luxury positioning.
