Requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- One year of experience in an acute or long-term health care setting is preferred.
- For work-based learning opportunities, completion of graduation requirements and a letter from the school confirming this are required.
- Must be willing to obtain Basic Life Support certification.
- Must demonstrate knowledge and skills to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served.
- Must be proficient in using computer and software programs, accurate medical terminology, unit communication equipment, electronic health record systems, and resource systems.
- Must follow code procedures, infection control policies, hospital standards of care, policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Must maintain patient and medical-record privacy and accurate, timely, legible, grammatically correct documentation using hospital-approved abbreviations.
- Must be able to adjust schedules and cover shift shortages as needed.
Responsibilities
- Provide daily basic patient care under the supervision and guidance of a Registered Nurse.
- Process physicians’ orders and perform clerical and clinical unit duties.
- Answer telephones and intercom communications and call staff as directed.
- Transport patients and coordinate care with other disciplines and appropriate hospital resources.
- Initiate and maintain records and reports, organize medical records, thin charts, prepare discharged records for pickup, initiate work orders, and post reports on charts.
- Participate in team huddles, check-backs, unit meetings, Unit Practice Councils, Kaizens, and assigned committees.
- Perform observational and purposeful rounding and use communication boards in patient rooms.
- Build trust with patients and customers by introducing oneself, listening actively, explaining procedures, and providing timely updates.
- Obtain and record vital signs and other measurements.
- Complete baths, skin care, personal hygiene activities, and backrubs.
- Make fluids and food available, assist with feeding, and record patient intake and output.
- Assist with patient admissions, transfers, and discharges, including setting up rooms and isolation rooms.
- Respond promptly to patient care needs, requests, and call lights.
- Apply ice packs, restraints, and binders.
- Collect specimens as directed and empty appropriate drainage devices.
- Perform post-mortem care, urinary catheter care, and shave preparation using clippers.
- Assemble equipment and supplies for diagnostic or treatment procedures performed by physicians or nurses.
- Report patient information and observations promptly to the appropriate nurse.
- Maintain equipment, supplies, unit neatness, and cleanliness; empty linen hampers and assist patients with bedpans and urinals.
- Promote a healing and supportive environment through therapeutic touch or massage, music therapy, aromatherapy, quiet-space maintenance, odor elimination, and appropriate room conditions.
- Accommodate patients’ cultural, spiritual, and emotional needs and uphold Relationship-Based Care.
- Collaborate with team members and management to improve workflow and develop cost-effective solutions.
- Support unit goals, strategic plans, hospital initiatives, and best-practice standards.
- Inform the supervisor when overtime or incidental overtime may occur and help maintain unit productivity.
- Work to resolve team conflicts professionally, accept direction and feedback, and adapt to changing assignments.
- Respond to unit needs by adjusting schedules and covering shift shortages.
