- A bachelor's degree is required.
- Completion of an accredited medical laboratory scientist program is required.
- National certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathology, American Association of Bioanalysts, American Medical Technologists, an equivalent certification, or eligibility for board certification is required; certification must be obtained within six months of hire.
- None of prior professional experience is required.
- A current Florida license as a Medical Technologist in the specialty or specialties required by the assigned laboratory section is required.
- Computer system proficiency, including ordering, resulting, and inquiry functions, is required.
- Compliance with laboratory, hospital, infection-control, safety, confidentiality, regulatory, and accrediting-agency policies and procedures is required.
- Analyze blood and body fluids using automated and complex manual methods while following established policies and procedures.
- Verify routine results and quality-control data for accuracy and reliability using prescribed guidelines.
- Perform, evaluate, and document quality-control, preventive-maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures.
- Receive guidance and direction from more experienced team members or a lead.
- Ensure proper utilization and preparation of reagents and supplies.
- Communicate critical results to the patient caregiver and report unusual findings to the immediate supervisor.
- Report work activities and pending work to the oncoming technologist.
- Respond to work-related technical inquiries as needed.
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance consistent with applicable policies and standards.
- Perform specimen collection, receiving, and processing procedures as required.
- Answer the telephone and greet guests in the department.
- Maintain current job knowledge to instruct students or other personnel effectively.
- Participate actively in the laboratory quality-improvement program.
- Practice infection-control and safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized work area.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient records and hospital and departmental matters.
- Perform other assigned duties.
- National certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathology, American Association of Bioanalysts, or American Medical Technologists is preferred.
