Requirements
  • One to three years of experience working with youth, teens, individuals who speak English as a new language, refugees, and individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • A combination of education and experience is accepted.
  • A valid New York State driver's license is required.
  • A registered and insured vehicle is required.
  • Awareness of one's own cultural identity and the cultural identity of members of the refugee community is required.
  • Understanding of the values, beliefs, and practices of refugee cultural groups is required.
  • Ability to use an electronic database system.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Office.
  • Customer service skills.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Mobility sufficient to drive to and participate in meetings at clients' homes and community facilities that may not meet federal accessibility standards.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to work with children and adults in a challenging and active environment.
Responsibilities
  • Plan and implement the daily operations and activities of the MAC grant through New York State OTDA.
  • Recruit program participants for career awareness activities, tutoring, socialization activities, health and financial literacy workshops, and other youth development activities.
  • Develop, plan, and manage activities for refugee youth ages 15 to 24 focused on academics, health, career development, financial literacy, and social integration.
  • Recruit community mentors and coordinate direct activities that support youth in developing skills in these five categories.
  • Develop after-school and weekend programs and activities for refugee youth and provide support for youth and their families as needed.
  • Create lesson plans and instructional activities focused on English learning and social adjustment, including engaging youth in activities and discussions.
  • Oversee and coordinate recreational activities, the Summer Academy, and other youth programming with youth staff, volunteers, interns, and mentors.
  • Gather information and help clients complete intake forms.
  • Facilitate communication between schools and families, arrange homework assistance, tutoring, English classes, and Regents test preparation.
  • Assist with social and educational activities such as cooking, art, music, sports, STEM activities, and holiday parties.
  • Assist with planning field trips and other recreational activities.
  • Communicate regularly with parents about program activities.
  • Advocate for youth and help families use email, applications, and other technology to receive Syracuse City School District communications.
  • Serve as an advocate and resource for the program, staff, and participants.
  • Monitor expenses and use of program assets.
  • Establish short- and long-term program objectives and ensure grant requirements are met.
  • Maintain and complete program statistics and reports, including case notes and billing points in the New York State BIN system.
  • Hold weekly team meetings.
  • Collaborate with Refugee Resettlement and other Refugee Youth Program staff.
  • Participate in implementing youth programming at Northside CYO.
  • Transport clients in an agency vehicle as needed and maintain a safe driving record.
  • Follow CCOC volunteer policy, New York State guidelines for youth mentors and volunteers, funding-source guidelines, and agency policies and procedures.
Desired Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree in Human Services or a related field.
  • Experience working with New Americans or newly arrived refugees.
  • Demonstrated cultural confidence.
  • General knowledge of refugee communities.
