Requirements
  • Two years of phlebotomy experience are required.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.
  • Excellent communication, word processing, and computer skills are required.
  • Professional discretion and confidentiality are required.
  • Ability to work a rotation of shifts and work weekends and holidays is required.
  • Phlebotomy certification or equivalent is required upon hire.
Responsibilities
  • Collect, register, and process patient laboratory specimens using a variety of collection techniques, protocols, and computer systems.
  • Follow rigorous patient identification protocols for patients of all ages and levels of complexity.
  • Service patients and perform home draws at assigned locations, including Patient Service Centers, clinics, and nursing homes.
  • Train new staff and coordinate training, including program maintenance and development, orientation, and direction of in-house trainers.
  • Evaluate training progress and assess staff competency.
  • Document and report competency to meet regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate retraining of current staff when ongoing errors are identified.
  • Coordinate ongoing staff training and development.
  • Participate in maintaining the department in technical readiness to meet regulatory compliance standards for New York State, the College of American Pathologists, and other regulatory agencies inspecting the clinical laboratory.
  • Ensure staff follow laboratory policies and procedures, including safety and security.
  • Work with supervisors and laboratory staff to plan and accomplish departmental and organizational goals and objectives.
  • Promote and support a positive team environment within the laboratory.
  • Assess work processes and suggest improved work methods to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and solve operational problems.
  • Evaluate and implement new techniques and procedures considered for process change.
Desired Qualifications
  • An Associate's degree is preferred.
  • Two years of phlebotomy operational experience are preferred.
