As Weil eyes a merger, who is a sizeable suitor?

As Weil eyes a merger, who is a sizeable suitor? News Reporter US heavyweight law firm Weil Gotshal and Manges is reportedly pursuing a merger with another law firm and is in active discussions, fuelling speculation across the legal sector about the likely contenders. Leadership at the New York-headquartered firm, renowned as a powerhouse in corporate restructuring, private equity, and mergers and acquisitions, reportedly told top partners that it is "negotiating a memorandum of understanding" with an unnamed law firm, according to Bloomberg Law. This year, Weil has seen an exodus of top partners in London and across the Pond, including former corporate co-managing partner Michael Hickey and private equity co-head Christopher Machera, who left the firm for Paul Weiss in August. The exodus escalated the whispers that a merger was on the cards for the US firm despite a spokesperson for Weil last month saying it was not engaged in merger discussions with any firm. A partner at a London-based legal recruitment firm told City AM it is "clear" there "appears a run" at the firm, the term used to describe a sudden mass exit of equity partners and top rainmakers. So far this year, around 40 of Weil's global partners have departed the firm. Stay in the know Three daily briefings with the key market moves and top business and political stories. "When that happens, quite often the firm ends up merging because there isn't enough left," the legal recruiter said. They added that this same situation happened to Olswang, which lost many partners and ended up merging with CMS and Nabarro in 2017. Eyes are on its New York competitors. Another source told City AM that Weil reportedly held a meeting on Tuesday to discuss a merger. They said they believe it is "definitely a US firm" and have reportedly heard it will be Willkie Farr & Gallagher or Skadden, both New York-headquartered white-shoe law firms. All three are direct competitors: Weil's global revenue stands at roughly $2bn, Willkie Farr & Gallagher at around $2bn, and Skadden at $3.7bn. An additional source confirmed to City AM Weil is not in talks with Skadden. This potential merger follows several years of major transatlantic tie-ups between British and American law firms. The trend of transatlantic mergers in the legal sector intensified last year after the landmark A&O Shearman deal in 2024. Since then, Herbert Smith Freehills merged with Kramer Levin to create a multi-billion-dollar law firm, and Ashurst agreed to merge with US-based Perkins Coie last November to become a $2.7bn firm. Hogan Lovells also tapped into a boom by merging with Cadwalader, Wall Street's oldest legal practice. However, despite the recent rise of transatlantic mergers, an adviser at a legal consultancy in London told City AM they would be "very surprised if it is a London firm" for Weil. They noted the "two names that have come up are Willkie and Vinson & Elkins". Vinson & Elkins is another large US firm known for its work in the energy sector. With global revenues of $1.11bn, the firm is headquartered in Houston, Texas, where Weil has three established offices, a State that is a US energy powerhouse. "Weil is an amazing brand. Doing a deal with someone in London would likely dilute their financial position; why would they do that?" they said. A founder and managing director of an advisory firm specialising in the legal sector, and former chief executive of a London-based litigation firm, also told City AM that Willkie and Vinson, and Elkins, were possible contenders if a merger was on the horizon. Weil, Willkie Farr, Vinson & Elkins and Skadden were all contacted for comment.

Skadden adds second Freshfields partner to Brussels competition team this year.

Skadden adds second Freshfields partner to Brussels competition team this year. Merit Olthoff joins January arrival Rafique Bachour at Skadden's Brussels office as US firm invests in antitrust talent 19 October 2026 Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom has hired antitrust partner Merit Olthoff from Freshfields to strengthen its Brussels' competition practice. Olthoff leaves Freshfields after four and a half years as a partner, having joined the firm in 2012, with her early practice years at legacy Hogan Lovells and the European Commission. She is dual-qualified at both the Berlin Bar and the Brussels Bar. She is also a board member of the European Competition Lawyers Forum and a member of the Studienvereinigung Kartellrecht, an association of German, Austrian and Swiss lawyers with a special intertest in antitrust law. Her practice spans all areas of EU and German competition law, with a focus on complex merger control, antitrust investigations and digital regulation, including the EU's Digital Markets Act and Foreign Subsidies Regulation. She advises technology and media companies, financial institutions, private equity firms and industrial companies undergoing transformation. Advertisement "Merit is a highly regarded EU and German competition lawyer with a strong market reputation and long-standing client relationships," said Skadden's executive partner Jeremy London. He added: "We continue to invest in talent across the firm, adding lawyers who bring the experience and judgement our clients need. Merit's arrival reflects that commitment and our ambitions for our Brussels office." Olthoff's arrival at Skadden follows that of Rafique Bachour, an antitrust partner and former global managing partner of Freshfields, who joined in January after 15 years with the Magic Circle firm. Bachour's exit from Freshfields followed an announcement in July last year that he would step down from a three-lawyer co-managing partner role after Georgia Dawson was elected for a second term as senior partner, while his fellow co-managing partners - Alan Mason and Rick van Aerssen - remained in their roles. Skadden also promoted Antoni Terra to partner in the Brussels office in its latest promotions round, with Alexander Knut Pascall and Georgios Zacharodimos promoted to counsel and Thorsten Goetz to of counsel. However, it lost Brussels-based antitrust partner Michael Frese to Hogan Lovells Cadwalader last month after a 13-year career. "The next phase of EU digital and foreign subsidies regulation is reshaping how companies anticipate, innovate, invest and compete in Europe," said Ingrid Vandenborre, head of Skadden's EU competition practice. "Sophisticated clients are looking for advisers who can help them plan for what comes next across these regimes, merger control and state aid, be it before the [European] Commission, national competition authorities or the EU Courts. Merit's broad EU and German antitrust experience makes her a valuable addition to our team." David Wales, leader of the global competition group, added: "Clients are continuing to navigate complex regulatory environments. Merit's experience, including in the media and technology sector where we have many clients, builds on the talent we are assembling across our global group." Olthoff said: "Skadden's global reach and standing in the market create a strong platform to help clients navigate competition, digital regulation and antitrust issues across Europe and globally. I look forward to working with the firm's lawyers across EMEA and worldwide as we support clients through an increasingly demanding regulatory environment."

Skadden has hired an antitrust partner from Freshfields in Brussels, as US firms continue to bolster their European antitrust practices. Merit Olthoff, who has been at Freshfields since 2012 and made partner in 2022, is set to join Skadden, in a move that will reunite her with former Freshfields co-global managing partner and antitrust specialist Rafique Bachour, who made the move to Skadden in January. Olthoff's practice focuses on complex merger control and digital regulation, with a particular focus on the media and technology sectors. Her recent experience includes advising Apple on the European Commission's investigation under the Digital Markets Act, and on the subsequent challenge in EU Courts in Luxembourg. In addition, Olthoff has experience advising large institutional investors on merger control and foreign direct investment aspects of investments and M&A transactions, with experience advising clients including Warburg Pincus and La Caisse. 'Skadden's global reach and standing in the market create a strong platform to help clients navigate competition, digital regulation and antitrust issues across Europe and globally,' said Olthoff. 'I look forward to working with the firm's lawyers across EMEA and worldwide as Legal Business support clients through an increasingly demanding regulatory environment.' The hire comes as a number of top US firms move to bolster their European antitrust platforms in order to take a larger slice of lucrative antitrust work. In addition to Skadden's hire of Bachour in January, Latham & Watkins hired Sascha Schubert, also from Freshfields, into its Brussels office in July, while Kirkland & Ellis hired a four-partner team from Cleary in May, based across London and Brussels. The activity comes against a shifting regulatory backdrop, as Brussels moves to pass reforms intended to make it easier for European companies to complete large M&A deals. 'The next phase of EU digital and foreign subsidies regulation is reshaping how companies anticipate, innovate, invest and compete in Europe,' said Ingrid Vandenborre, head of Skadden's European antitrust and competition practice. 'Sophisticated clients are looking for advisers who can help them plan for what comes next across these regimes, merger control and state aid, be it before the Commission, national competition authorities, or the EU Courts. 'Merit's broad EU and German antitrust experience makes her a valuable addition to its team.' For its part, Freshfields has seen a number of exits across its European offices in recent months, with Frankfurt private equity M&A partner Olga Stürmer moving to Weil, Hamburg M&A partner Natascha Doll moving to White & Case, and structured finance partner Mandeep Lotay moving to Paul Weiss, all last month. Olthoff's exit leaves the firm with ten antitrust partners remaining in Brussels, according to its website, and a further ten across its German offices. A Freshfields spokesperson said: 'We wish Merit all the best.'

US Lawyers - Skadden joined by five seasoned litigators in Chicago.

US Lawyers - Skadden joined by five seasoned litigators in Chicago. Skadden is pleased to announce that its nationally recognized Mass Torts and Product Liability Group has expanded with the addition of five accomplished litigators - Lyn Pruitt, (pictured) Adria Conklin, Mary Catherine Way and David Koehler as partners and Lauren Grinder as counsel - who join the firm affiliated with the Chicago office. Together with Brian O'Donoghue, a leading mass torts litigator who joined as a partner in July, these additions strengthen a trial bench already recognized as a leader in high-stakes product liability and mass tort defense. Skadden's Mass Torts Group pioneered the "national counsel" model for managing mass tort litigation, and these new partners add significant experience across multidistrict litigation, coordinated proceedings, bellwether trials and the strategic defense of large-scale tort disputes. "Lyn, Adria, Mary Catherine, David and Lauren are highly regarded litigators with extensive experience handling sophisticated pharmaceutical and medical device, PFAS environmental and other product liability matters," said John Beisner, leader of Skadden's Mass Torts and Product Liability Group. "Each has played a pivotal role in landmark litigation, opposed the most aggressive leading plaintiffs' firms and built winning partnerships with local counsel across jurisdictions nationwide. Their arrival reflects our continued investment in exceptional mass torts talent, and we are thrilled to welcome them to the firm." "Skadden has a premier platform for handling complex litigation, and I am excited to welcome and work alongside an established team with a strong reputation in mass torts and product liability matters," said Mr. O'Donoghue. "I have worked successfully with this team of litigators for years, often in the toughest jurisdictions. They bring deep knowledge of the national liability landscape and strategies for disputing plaintiffs' tactics, leveraging technology and strategic relationships to resolve massive case dockets, and efficiently minimizing exposure for our clients." Ms. Pruitt has spent more than three decades defending companies in high-stakes product liability litigation. She focuses her practice on representing leading pharmaceutical and medical device companies and has extensive experience representing other companies in consumer class actions and toxic tort disputes. A fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, she has first-chaired trials for a broad range of clients and is widely sought after for her ability to craft compelling trial narratives in bellwether proceedings that shape the trajectory of entire MDLs. She has earned recognition from Chambers USA in its Nationwide Product Liability & Mass Torts category and from Chambers Global in its USA Litigation: Trial Lawyers category, among other accolades. Ms. Conklin has extensive experience advising and defending clients across the full life cycle of large-scale litigation, including strategy development, discovery, case workup and trial. She focuses her practice on pharmaceutical litigation, product liability, mass tort matters and other complex commercial disputes. Ms. Conklin successfully coordinates large teams of lawyers across multiple firms in connection with complex analyses, case development and trial preparation. Ms. Way is a seasoned product liability litigator with a practice focused on complex, multijurisdictional mass tort suits involving personal injury claims. She has extensive experience representing clients at all stages of litigation in significant state and federal proceedings nationwide. Ms. Way regularly works alongside counsel across multiple law firms and jurisdictions, developing unified litigation strategies that drive favorable results in high-stakes matters. Ms. Way excels at fostering collaboration among diverse legal teams and executing coordinated strategic defenses that advance client objectives. Mr. Koehler regularly represents clients in large-scale mass tort actions, including federal and state product liability, consumer fraud and medical monitoring litigation, with particular experience representing pharmaceutical, medical device and other life sciences companies. Mr. Koehler has repeatedly been named one of Best Lawyers' Ones to Watch in America in recognition of his work. Ms. Grinder handles high-stakes litigation from discovery through trial and appeal, with particular experience in trial strategy, witness preparation and bellwether cases. She also has experience advising clients on regulatory compliance, risk management and government investigations.
