Clinic to offer wheelchair, mobility aid repairs for those facing financial hardship, housing insecurity. August 18, 2026 | 12:12 am Updated August 17, 2026 | 11:48 pm SOS International is bringing its Wheelchair & Mobility Aid Clinic to Owensboro for the first time, offering free repairs and other services to people experiencing financial hardship, housing insecurity, or homelessness. The clinic will be held from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Aug. 22 at the H.L. Neblett Community Center, 801 West 5th Street. The event is funded through a grant from Owensboro Health Regional Hospital and hosted in partnership with Audubon Area Community Care Clinic. Participants can receive free repairs, cleaning, safety assessments, and maintenance for wheelchairs, walkers, and other mobility equipment. Free lunch will also be provided. SOS mobility specialists will work to ensure participants have safe, functional equipment that allows them to maintain independence and access healthcare and other essential services. "Access to reliable mobility equipment can be life-changing, but many individuals face significant barriers when repairs are needed or equipment is no longer functioning properly," said Brian Jointer, local health program manager for SOS International. "Through the support of Owensboro Health and our partnership with Audubon Area Community Care Clinic, we are able to bring this successful program to Owensboro and meet a growing need in the community." Dan Eaton, program director of the Audubon Area Community Care Clinic, said malfunctioning mobility equipment can create additional challenges for people already facing financial or housing difficulties. "Community partnerships like this are essential to ensuring that our most vulnerable neighbors have access to the resources they need to live healthy, independent lives," Eaton said. "For individuals facing homelessness, housing insecurity, or financial hardship, a wheelchair or walker that is not functioning properly can create significant barriers to healthcare, employment, and everyday activities." Eaton said the partnership allows the organizations to bring the service directly to those who need it. "By working together with SOS International, we are helping remove those barriers and bringing much-needed support directly to the people who need it most," he said. "This collaboration reflects the best of our community coming together to improve lives and create opportunities for everyone to thrive." SOS launched its Wheelchair & Mobility Aid Clinic program in 2024 with support from a Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation grant. The program provides free repairs, replacements, cleaning, and maintenance for people who might otherwise go without safe and dependable mobility equipment. The organization said its clinics have served more than 200 members of Louisville's disability community over the past two years. The Owensboro clinic marks the program's first expansion into the community.
