- Greet and welcome patients.
- Verify patients’ medical histories and information.
- Prepare patients before drawing blood.
- Explain blood draw procedures and answer patients’ questions.
- Follow health and safety protocols and procedures to maintain sanitary work areas.
- Identify the appropriate needle size and location for each blood draw.
- Use the correct collection tubes and containers for requested laboratory work.
- Perform blood sampling techniques and procedures.
- Gather medical testing materials, including needles, sample vials, blood storage bags, and test tubes.
- Label blood samples properly.
- Update patient information accurately in the organization’s database.
- Help nervous or frightened patients remain calm during blood draws.
- Work with supervising physicians and follow their directions.
- Analyze blood specimens using the correct testing equipment when necessary.
- Clean, maintain, and calibrate laboratory equipment used for drawing and testing blood specimens.
- Restock the laboratory and order supplies.
- Perform routine in-office tests, including glucose testing, strep and flu testing, urinalysis, electrocardiograms, tuberculosis skin tests, and remote patient monitoring setup.
- Prior experience as a phlebotomist.
- Phlebotomist certification.
