Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree in Athletic Training or a related field is required.
  • A Certified Athletic Trainer credential from the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification is required upon hire.
  • New York State licensure as an Athletic Trainer is required upon hire.
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification is required upon hire.
  • The employee must maintain all requirements mandated by Strong Memorial Hospital / Strong Health as a condition of employment.
  • Internship route certification in Athletic Training is required.
  • The ability to call for and/or render care in the event of a patient emergency is required.
Responsibilities
  • Provide athletic training services to local high schools and collegiate institutions through prevention, conditioning, re-conditioning, and rehabilitation for athletic injuries in the clinic setting under physician direction and in collaboration with medical and allied health professionals.
  • Evaluate injuries, apply first aid, coordinate referrals to medical care, communicate with parents or guardians and physicians, develop conditioning programs during recovery, instruct athletes in prescribed home rehabilitation, and teach functional progression procedures for return to participation.
  • Instruct athletes, parents or guardians, and coaches regarding conditioning, weight control, diet, injury prevention, and injury care.
  • Educate coaches on procedures and techniques for performance enhancement, teach student athletic trainers first-aid protocols, provide guidance on prophylactic skills and record keeping, and conduct in-service programs for coaching staff on injury care and prevention.
  • Evaluate prior injuries and develop and teach injury-prevention programs; assess injury rates and etiology and suggest changes to sports techniques or practice procedures.
  • Educate, coach, and train student athletic trainers in approved procedures.
  • Maintain inventory and assist with ordering supplies as needed.
  • Document patients’ progress and treatment responses in the medical record.
  • Evaluate patients’ functional status, abilities, and disabilities for participation in sports; apply or direct application of measures and tests; and plan treatment programs based on physician diagnosis, prognosis, and orders.
  • Determine rehabilitation types and frequencies and communicate care-plan options to patients.
  • Obtain supporting information from family members, physicians, nursing staff, and other sources.
  • Communicate with physicians and other involved personnel and recommend program modifications as needed.
  • Assist patients through the call-bell system under the direction of a registered nurse.
  • Provide range-of-motion exercises according to the plan of care.
  • Initiate and assist with transfers in and out of beds, chairs, wheelchairs, and lifts, and teach patients and families safe transfer techniques.
  • Select and safely use transfer equipment.
  • Collaborate with team members to meet patient mobilization needs.
  • Promote functional gains through patient instruction and supervision.
  • Participate in creating mobility plans.
  • Ensure side rails and safety equipment are correctly positioned and operational.
  • Follow hospital safety policies and procedures and notify appropriate personnel of hazards.
  • Maintain constant observation of assigned patients.
  • Provide care to patients across different age groups.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and administrative and clinical continuing-education programs.
  • Keep current in the field by reading professional articles and journals and attending continuing-education-unit courses in athletic training.
  • Attend selected professional meetings and seminars.
  • Support orthopedic sports medicine physicians in clinic by documenting, taking histories, performing examinations, and discussing exercise progression with patients.
  • Assist in the ambulatory surgery center with patient-care education and postoperative exercise guidelines.
  • Perform evaluation and physical testing with workplace-health clients to develop exercise programs for injury prevention and health maintenance.
  • Assist with sports-performance programs, including performance training, active release technique, and group exercise classes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Master's degree in Athletic Training or a related field is preferred.
  • Eighteen months of progressively responsible professional experience in outpatient orthopedic clinical care and athletic training outreach is required for Band Two status.
  • Four years of progressively responsible professional experience as an athletic trainer in outpatient orthopedic clinical care and athletic training outreach is minimally required for Band Three status; one year dedicated to the URMC Sports Medicine Department is preferred.
  • Six years of progressively responsible professional experience as an athletic trainer in outpatient orthopedic clinical care and athletic training outreach is minimally required for Senior status; two years dedicated to the URMC Sports Medicine Department is preferred.
