Sferical One: Ericsson and partners make AI supercomputing a reality in Sweden.

Sferical One: Ericsson and partners make AI supercomputing a reality in Sweden. Oct 16, 2026 * Ericsson is among several major Swedish companies who have started to utilise a new sovereign AI supercomputer in Sweden, called Sferical One, officially launched today by the Sferical AI initiative. As a founding member of Sferical AI - alongside AstraZeneca, Saab, SEB and Wallenberg Investments, with SKF as a strategic partner - Ericsson gains access to secure, sovereign Swedish computing capacity to develop, deliver, and deploy advanced AI solutions alongside the partner companies. The initiative aims to deliver direct societal benefits to Sweden as AI use case momentum gathers pace. Shared use of investment, capacity and expertise under the Sferical AI initiative means the partners can scale AI development faster. Ericsson will contribute telecom expertise, drive AI use cases, and jointly develop a secure, sovereign AI platform, while simultaneously using the platform to further develop Ericsson's own network and automation capabilities. The system is an NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD built on NVIDIA DGX GB300 systems. The system has been running since late summer 2026. Sferical AI will also build services based on NVIDIA Nemotron open multimodal AI models. Today's event was attended by senior executives from Sferical AI, the Swedish partner companies, including Ericsson President and CEO, Per Narvinger, and Nvidia founder and CEO, Jensen Huang. Ericsson CTO, Erik Ekudden, who led Ericsson's co-development of Sferical from inception, says: "I envision the future as a 6G/AI intelligent fabric - a universal framework which enables different AI systems to work together securely and with reliable performance, no matter where they are or who built them. Ensuring a robust and secure infrastructure requires best in class AI models. To build those, we need the best compute infrastructure. Through our cooperation with Sferical we get access to sovereign infrastructure for model training and refinement." Addressing the partner companies at the Sferical One launch, Jensen Huang predicted an exciting future. "You have done the hardest part... you have started," he said. Ericsson's Sferical One engagement to date relates to ensuring secure and reliable networks through AI-based network operations. Jenny Nordlöw, CEO, Sferical AI, says: "Sferical One enables the companies to train and run AI models at a larger scale on a sovereign platform. What makes Sferical unique isn't just the technology, but that several of Sweden's largest companies share the same infrastructure, develop solutions together and share knowledge across industries." Marcus Wallenberg, Chair of Wallenberg Investments, says: "AI will be a critical component of Swedish industry's future competitiveness. Sferical One will help some of Sweden's leading companies stay at the forefront of that development. It is a long-term investment in the capabilities and expertise we will need to compete in the future."

AstraZeneca strikes $1.5b AI drug discovery deal with Insitro.

AstraZeneca strikes $1.5b AI drug discovery deal with Insitro. AstraZeneca said it partnered with insitro, a California-based AI drug discovery startup, on October 15 to find and develop treatments for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, or MASH, and cardiomyopathies. Insitro will use machine learning and lab-grown cell models to identify the diseases' underlying biology and advance targets selected by AstraZeneca to the development-candidate stage. AstraZeneca will then fund and run future clinical trials. AstraZeneca will pay insitro US$40 million upfront. The startup could also receive up to about US$1.46 billion in development and commercial milestone payments, plus single-digit percentage royalties on future sales. The agreement adds to insitro's existing partnerships with Bristol Myers Squibb and Eli Lilly. It also comes after the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a treatment for MASH in 2024. AstraZeneca strikes up to $1.5 billion AI drug discovery deal with Insitro. Published on 10/15/2026 at 08:42 am EDT - Modified on 10/15/2026 at 08:50 am EDT By Adria Calatayud AstraZeneca said it is teaming up with startup Insitro to deploy artificial intelligence to explore new treatments for cardiometabolic diseases in a deal valued at as much as $1.5 billion. The U.K. drugmaker will pay AI therapeutics company Insitro $40 million upfront and up to $1.46 billion subject to meeting development and commercial targets, in exchange for the exclusive worldwide rights to advance programs identified as part of the partnership, the companies said Thursday. Insitro will also be eligible to receive royalties based on potential sales, they added. AstraZeneca said the collaboration would focus on difficult-to-treat cardiometabolic diseases such as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, also known as fatty liver disease, and cardiomyopathies. Under the deal, Insitro will use its AI platform to identify the root cause of disease and advance AstraZeneca-nominated targets, the companies said. Insitro said AstraZeneca would lead all clinical development, regulatory work, as well as commercialization activities. The partnership marks the latest to pair pharmaceutical and AI companies, as drugmakers turn to the technology in a bid to speed up the discovery and development of new medicines. Wegovy maker Novo Nordisk last month said it would partner with Anthropic to use the AI lab's science-specific platform, known as Claude Science, for drug research. Rival Roche earlier this year said it would build a supercomputer in partnership with Nvidia. AstraZeneca strikes $40 million AI drug discovery deal with insitro. 1 hour ago 44 LONDON, Oct 15: AstraZeneca has teamed up with artificial intelligence biotech company insitro to discover and develop new treatments for difficult to treat liver and heart conditions, the British drugmaker said on Thursday. Under the agreement, AstraZeneca will pay $40 million up front, with California-based insitro eligible for up to about $1.46 billion in potential development and commercial milestones, as well as a single-digit percentage of future sales in royalties. The multi-year collaboration will focus on metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), a severe liver disease, and cardiomyopathies, a group of diseases that affect the heart muscle. Both have historically lacked effective therapies because researchers have struggled to pinpoint their root biological drivers, the drugmaker said. Insitro will use its "Virtual Human" AI platform, which combines lab-grown cell models and machine learning, to identify causal disease biology and advance AstraZeneca-nominated targets from discovery to development-candidate stage. AstraZeneca will then run and fund future clinical trials. The deal builds on insitro's expansion across the pharmaceuticals industry. The biotech company recently expanded its partnership with Bristol Myers Squibb to advance a broader portfolio of targets for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). It also teamed up with Eli Lilly to build AI models that predict pharmacological properties of small molecules in living organisms. "Choosing the new targets that we want to put into our discovery pipeline is one of the hardest things we do across research and development," Sharon Barr, executive vice president of biopharmaceuticals R&D at AstraZeneca, told Reuters. "By the time we read about a new pathway or target (in major scientific journals), it is no longer novel. It's in the public domain and we're already a few steps too late. But when we identify these unique connections early and test them in cellular systems, we're ahead of the game." Barr added that pairing AI tools with experienced scientists allows the company to test fewer molecules in the lab, reduce guesswork and speed the search for effective medicines.
