About the company

The Voleon Group runs hedge funds for institutions such as pension plans and sovereign wealth funds, using machine-learning models instead of human judgment to choose every trade. It began live trading in 2008 as one of the early hedge funds to hand all of its trading decisions to machine-learning models. Those models comb through years of price and trading data for patterns that predict market moves, then trade automatically in stocks, bonds, futures, currencies and derivatives. Voleon earns management fees plus a share of the gains it makes for investors. A computer scientist and a statistician founded Voleon in 2007, and it is based in Berkeley, California, near the University of California campus.

What believers are saying

  • The business is growing fast: Voleon's SEC-reported assets rose 80% in the year to December 2025, to $29.4 billion.
  • Room to grow: Voleon listed 58 open roles in October 2026, including 10 in London and 6 in New York.
  • Entry pay is high: Voleon's 2027 new-grad software engineers get a $175,000 to $210,000 base salary plus a bonus.

What critics are saying

  • Research seats are scarce: only 28 of 158 staff at its fund-management arm did investment work in July 2026.
  • Its market-making rivals are giants: Citadel Securities, Jane Street and Hudson River grossed $27 billion from January to March 2026.
  • Machine learning has had losing years: Voleon lost money in 2016 after five straight profitable years.

What makes The Voleon Group unique

  • It is becoming a bond dealer: by July 2026, sister firm Voleon Securities quoted prices on bond trading platforms.
  • You learn from a working academic: co-founder Jon McAuliffe, an investment chief, is an adjunct statistics professor at UC Berkeley.
  • Many jobs don't require an office: 20 of Voleon's open roles in October 2026 were listed as fully remote.
