Requirements
  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering with 10+ years of direct experience in electronics hardware and ASIC/FPGA development
  • Demonstrated experience in delivering flight avionics for aircraft, launch vehicles, or other space applications.
  • Understanding of analog/digital filtering, mixed-signal circuit design, analysis, and test.

Responsibilities
  • Develop mixed-signal designs and shepherd them through the full product life-cycle, including requirements definition, design, development, qualification and release to production.
  • Support avionics architecture trade studies, analyses, performance characterization and specification, device selection, schematic generation, and hardware test.
  • Perform de-rating analysis, worst case circuit analysis, FMECA, and system reliability analysis.
  • Support definition and implementation of hardware to software interfaces to implement control law and automated test functions.
  • Support risk analyses, design for test/manufacture/cost, and root-cause analysis of test discrepancies.
  • Architect and generate ASIC/FPGA RTL code
  • Generate test cases and run simulations to verify functionality of ASIC/FPGA code
  • Complete FPGA synthesis and resolve all errors/warnings
  • Complete FPGA place and route and ensure sufficient timing margin through STA
  • Complete electrical checkout of circuit cards/FPGAs for requirement verification/design validation
  • Prepare materials for peer reviews and major design reviews
  • Support rocket engine testing and ground support as necessary
Desired Qualifications
  • Direct experience in launch vehicle avionics systems integration
  • Graduate degree in related engineering or technical field with 15+ years of direct experience in electronics hardware development
  • Understanding of sensor and actuator technologies including: RTD’s, Pressure Transducers, DC brushless motors, Solenoid valves, Thermocouples, Hydraulic servo valves, LVDT, RVDT, Rotary/Linear Encoders.
  • Demonstrated expertise designing Class 3 board assemblies
  • Utilizing IPC and NASA-STD-8739.n (or similar) standards.
  • Proficiency using Altium (or similar tools) to design complex boards; and experience working with external board manufacturing and assembly vendors.
  • A desire to design mission critical hardware for flight applications.
  • Working knowledge of high-reliability, radiation-tolerant, radiation-hardened flight hardware intended for high altitude and space environments.
  • Proficiency with scripting; programming and analysis/modeling tools: Python, Linux/Windows shell scripting; assembly language, C, C++; MATLAB / Simulink / SPICE (or similar)
  • Exposure to designing safety or mission critical aerospace flight hardware compliant with DO-254.
  • Experience with SystemVerilog UVM, Cocotb or other PLI/DPI based co-simulation environment

Gov. Polis helps cut the ribbon on new Ursa Major Longmont facility. The Berthoud-based aerospace company's latest expansion may add up to 1,800 new jobs. By Joan Cullen Gov. Jared Polis joined Ursa Major CEO Chris Spagnoletti on Thursday, Aug. 20, to cut the ribbon at the Berthoud-based aerospace company's newest facility in Longmont. The burgeoning aerospace business now has a total of six locations: Berthoud, Galeton and Longmont in Colorado; Youngstown and Boardman in Ohio; and Washington, D.C. Before the event began, Ursa Major executives shared details about the new facility with attendees. They said avionics and in-space propulsion teams will work at the Longmont site, and that employees have been slowly moving into the new space over the last few months. "We're not making any energetics here," Pete Wolt, assistant director of business development, said. Solid Missile Systems President Jason Merdith interjected to put that in layman's terms. "No things that go boom," he quipped. Ursa Major opens major expansion in Longmont After a welcome from Savanah Bray, Ursa Major's head of marketing and communications, a jubilant Spagnoletti greeted the crowd and thanked Polis for coming to help celebrate the milestone. Spagnoletti said the new space in Longmont provides "more than 125 seats" for the company's avionics and in-space propulsion system teams and will also house some corporate personnel, like the finance department. The CEO is excited about the new 25,000-square-foot building, noting that it has dedicated welding and manufacturing labs, an ISO 7 hard-walled clean room with an ISO 8 gowning room, and an environmental test lab. "That means we can do a lot of testing on-site, under our control, which is a big deal," Spagnoletti explained. On a site tour after the ceremony, Spagnoletti also shared that Ursa Major has the only reusable hypersonic test engine in the United States. Moving at hypersonic speed While there's great excitement for the Longmont facility, Ursa Major is not abandoning its Berthoud site, which is the company's headquarters. "We're clearing out floor space to create more room for manufacturing our hypersonic all-up rounds, liquid engines and solid rocket motors," Spagnoletti said about the Berthoud location. Spagnoletti then introduced Polis. "He brings his passion for innovation into his work as governor." Spagnoletti continued, "Under his leadership, Colorado continues to lead the way at the epicenter of the aerospace economy, fostering an ecosystem where innovation and entrepreneurship thrive." "We are number one in aerospace," Polis said about Colorado. He then drew laughter from the crowd when he joked that the reason for that is "we're a mile closer to space." The governor went on to describe Colorado as "a centerpiece of that aerospace ecosystem." Polis praised Ursa Major for adding "good jobs that will support families," noting that the company's growth will add up to 1,800 new positions in Colorado. More rocket scientists needed Ursa Major's exponential growth is requiring the company to acquire talent at a fast pace. "We are hiring rapidly across the board," Bray said, adding that the company currently has over a hundred job openings posted on its website. Ursa Major already employs 300 people at its facilities in Colorado. "The reality is that we could have expanded this site to many places, but our team and the talent are here in Longmont and Colorado," Spagnoletti said, proudly adding that Ursa Major employs "American workers building American hardware from right here in Colorado." Ursa Major's President of Liquid Systems, Kip Freeman, echoed the sentiment. "The location here is good for getting that kind of talent," he said, speaking of the company's avionics and in-space propulsion specialists. $35 million in tax credits for Ursa Major The governor was joined at the ribbon-cutting by members of the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade. In a press release, OEDIT reported that the Economic Development Commission approved up to $35,360,763 in a performance-based job growth incentive tax credit for Ursa Major over eight years. The company could be eligible to convert up to $23 million of the award into refundable tax credits, which would be returned at 80%, or up to $18.4 million, provided it meets "specific net new job creation and salary requirements." OEDIT Executive Director Eve Lieberman said Ursa Major's expansion "underscores the strength of our state's business climate and Colorado's status as a global leader in aerospace and defense." She continued, "Our state is home to more than 2,000 aerospace companies representing 24% growth over the last five years, and we are thrilled to support Ursa Major's growth in this very key Colorado industry."

Ursa Major opens Longmont facility for 125+ employees, expands hypersonics and solid rocket motor production

Ursa Major has opened a new manufacturing facility in Longmont, Colorado, with capacity for more than 125 employees. The facility will produce avionics and in-space propulsion systems, featuring dedicated welding and manufacturing labs, an ISO 7 clean room, and an environmental test lab. The expansion allows Ursa Major to increase production of liquid engines, vehicle integration, and solid rocket motors at its Berthoud headquarters. CEO Chris Spagnoletti said the move addresses urgent customer demand, noting that the company's in-space propulsion delivers orbital maneuverability faster than legacy suppliers. Colorado Governor Jared Polis attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony on 20 August. Ursa Major now operates six sites across Colorado, Ohio, and Washington, D.C., following a Phase 1 manufacturing expansion completed in March.

Startups are bringing software, robotics and manufacturing methods developed around commercial space into a defense industry under pressure to produce weapons faster HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Pentagon's push to replenish missile inventories is creating an opening for a new class of manufacturers that say the problem isn't simply a shortage of factory space. It is how those factories are built. Startups such as Machina, Hadrian and Freeform are applying software, robotics and highly automated production techniques to aerospace and defense manufacturing, challenging a model that has long relied on dedicated machinery, specialized tooling and skilled labor to make relatively small numbers of complex parts. Some of the new manufacturing technology grew out of the commercial space industry. At this year's Space and Missile Defense Symposium, Los Angeles-based Machina is displaying a 16-foot fuselage for a hypersonic vehicle that it manufactured for Ursa Major, a company that is expanding from rocket propulsion into complete hypersonic missile systems. Machina co-founder and chief executive Edward Mehr, who previously worked at SpaceX and Relativity Space, says the hardware is an example of how AI can be applied not to designing weapons, but to controlling the machines that manufacture them. "Missile programs are not constrained by design. They are constrained by production," Mehr told SpaceNews. Machina recently received a qualification contract from Lockheed Martin supporting the Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile, or JASSM, a long-range cruise missile built for the Air Force. The agreement is significant for Machina because it puts an assembly made with the company's manufacturing process through qualification for an operational missile program. Lockheed is also an investor in Machina through Lockheed Martin Ventures. Mehr said manufacturing fuselage structures for hypersonic missiles has become "a big area of growth for us." Machina's manufacturing platform, called RoboCraftsman, uses robotic arms to progressively shape sheets of metal into aerospace structures. The company uses artificial intelligence to give robotic equipment more autonomy over how it performs a physical task. "Our use of AI and robotics allows us to build flexible manufacturing systems that can switch between processes and geometries while reducing the need for dedicated tooling," Mehr said. Mehr said traditional programs can require tens of millions of dollars in dedicated equipment and long setup periods before the first production hardware is available for testing. Machina's argument is that a programmable factory can compress that transition because much of the change resides in software rather than in a new set of dies and machinery. Equipment previously producing automotive hardware, for example, could be reprogrammed to begin making a missile structure after receiving the digital design, he said. "Under the traditional model, a significant design change or a new missile component can require another investment in tooling, equipment and production setup," Mehr said. "With our system, much of that change can happen through software rather than by building another dedicated manufacturing line." Machina is looking to demonstrate that its approach can consistently meet the tolerances, quality requirements and production rates demanded by major weapons programs. The company is preparing to scale. Machina raised $124 million earlier this year to help finance a new 200,000-square-foot U.S. factory intended to move the technology from lower-volume work into larger production runs. Its customers also include NASA and Toyota.

US Navy awards Ursa Major $10M to advance MK 104 rocket motor. The US Navy has awarded Ursa Major a $10-million contract to advance development of the MK 104 solid rocket motor as part of efforts to strengthen the country's missile propulsion industrial base. The award will fund the motor's progress through critical design review and static fire testing, bringing the program closer to production. To support the effort, the Colorado-based company will use its Lynx manufacturing approach, which is designed to produce adaptable solid rocket motors at a rate of hundreds of units annually. Jason Meredith, president of Solid Missile Systems at Ursa Major, said this development emphasizes scalability and faster processes as "solid rocket motor production has become the bottleneck in missile manufacturing." MK 104 program. The contract builds on a series of recent milestones for the MK 104. In September 2025, Raytheon awarded Avio USA a purchase order worth up to $26 million to perform engineering work supporting the Standard Missile program. Earlier, in 2024, the navy broadened its supplier base by awarding X-Bow contracts to produce MK 104 solid rocket motors using its proprietary manufacturing processes. In April of the same year, Ursa Major also partnered with the US Navy to develop a 3D-printed replacement for the MK 104 motor used in the SM-2, SM-3, and SM-6 missile families.
