Requirements
  • A high school diploma or General Educational Development credential is required.
  • Must meet Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services-approved state and/or national certification requirements within the required state or Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services timeline.
  • Must satisfy all applicable state licensure, education, and training requirements.
  • Must demonstrate commitment to the organization’s culture, values, and customer service standards.
  • Continued employment depends on successful completion of the organization’s dialysis training program and cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification.
  • Must successfully complete the Ishihara Color Blindness Test as a condition of employment, with reasonable accommodations considered.
  • Must be able to provide direct patient care involving heavy lifting, moving patients, assisting with ambulation, prolonged standing, bending, and occasional pushing or pulling of equipment.
  • Must be able to lift and lower solutions weighing up to 30 pounds frequently and up to 40 pounds occasionally, as high as 5 feet.
  • Must be able to travel between assigned facilities and various community locations, with possible travel to regional, business-unit, and corporate meetings.
Responsibilities
  • Provide safe and effective dialysis therapy as part of the dialysis health care team under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse.
  • Set up and operate hemodialysis machines and maintain a safe and clean working environment.
  • Provide patient-specific education regarding adequacy measures, disease processes, and vascular access under appropriate supervision.
  • Welcome assigned patients and inquire about their wellbeing since their last treatment.
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform vascular access cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or permitted by state law.
  • Obtain pre-treatment and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations.
  • Initiate dialysis treatment according to prescribed orders, including blood flow and dialysate flow.
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems and provide interventions as prescribed or directed.
  • Monitor patients’ responses to dialysis therapy.
  • Perform reinfusion and discontinue dialysis treatment according to established procedures, including documenting treatment and evaluating venous access.
  • Obtain hemostasis and apply appropriate dressings.
  • Evaluate patients before discharge.
  • Calculate and enter individual dialysis machine programming for ultrafiltration goals, treatment time, and ultrafiltration modeling as prescribed.
  • Ensure appropriate safety alarms are enabled, including Narrow Venous Limits 160.
  • Record accurate and timely vital signs and treatment parameters on the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet.
  • Complete documentation related to patient treatment, including Hemodialysis Treatment Sheets and progress notes when applicable.
  • Report significant information or changes in patient condition to the registered nurse or supervisor.
  • Observe patients and conduct machine safety checks according to facility policy, reporting unusual findings.
  • Perform and document interventions for unusual patient status and document patients’ responses.
  • Evaluate vascular access during treatment, including arterial and venous monitoring pressures, and report unusual findings.
  • Obtain prescribed laboratory testing and prepare specimens for collection.
  • Clean blood spills immediately with appropriate disinfectant according to facility policy.
  • Prepare, organize, and efficiently use supplies and equipment to prevent waste.
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under registered nurse supervision.
  • Assist in training applicable direct patient care staff on appropriate programs under nurse supervision.
  • Follow organization business policies, procedures, systems, and ethical business practices.
  • Maintain environmental integrity and aesthetics by ensuring all areas are safe and clean.
  • Clean and disinfect dialysis machines, chairs, equipment, and surrounding areas between treatments.
  • Prepare for dialysis treatments and perform required pretreatment dialysis machine alarm testing, including Pressure Holding Test.
  • Initiate the Solution Delivery System.
  • Participate in and document Continuous Quality Improvement activities.
  • Enter treatment data into the designated clinical application accurately and promptly.
  • Review treatment sheets for completeness and ensure required nursing signatures and corrections are completed.
  • Prepare initial patient charts for admission and compile paperwork for chart placement.
  • Prepare and print laboratory requisitions for prescribed or stat specimens.
  • Collect, label, prepare, and store laboratory samples according to laboratory specifications.
  • Ensure laboratory specimens are collected by the appropriate courier.
  • Assist with infection control audits and reinforce infection control practices among staff and patients.
  • Follow infection control policies and procedures.
  • Reinforce infection control education for patients and families under the direction of the clinical manager or designee as permitted by state law.
  • Follow newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis and coordinate transitional dialysis care.
  • Reinforce education and care for new patients as permitted by state law.
  • Coordinate with appropriate staff members to support the patient experience and ensure disciplines are scheduled according to plan.
  • Assist patients in understanding home dialysis products, home dialysis benefits, and home dialysis options.
  • Set and perform treatments on all machines used in the Transitional Care Unit.
  • Assist patients in understanding treatment options, including demonstrating peritoneal dialysis setup.
  • Assist with coordinating transitions to patients’ chosen dialysis modality.
  • Assist with supply ordering and inventory for the Transitional Care Unit.

  • Previous patient care experience in a hospital setting or a related facility is preferred.
