About the Job

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of R&D experience developing and qualifying new materials in an industrial environment, preferably in composites or plastics processing.
  • Concrete experience working in a materials laboratory.
  • Proficiency in composite-material characterization techniques, including mechanical testing, microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and ability to use literature to understand relationships between material structure and properties.
  • Practical skills designing and fabricating experimental setups.
  • Experience gained in a startup or dynamic environment, with autonomy, adaptability, and proactivity.
  • Ability to report on plans and progress and produce clear, precise, complete technical reports.
  • Ability to work effectively with a team and communicate with a range of stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Translate customer or Product-team specifications into technical requirements by analyzing target performance, comparing it with Fairmat's internal state of the art, and identifying development needs.
  • Propose an action plan with clear, measurable milestones, including a resolution plan, analysis and testing methods, and associated compliance criteria to validate prototypes.
  • Lead and participate in experimental campaigns using design-of-experiments methods and decision trees to iterate quickly and finalize a bill of materials (BOM) on schedule.
  • Write regular, detailed technical reports tracking tests and results.
  • Produce and characterize laboratory prototypes that meet specifications for customer delivery.
  • Provide ongoing technical support to Product and Production teams at FairFactory or subcontractor sites, supporting industrialization through completion of the bill of process (BOP).
  • Translate internal technology bottlenecks into clear problems, identify resolution hypotheses, and define analysis and testing methods to validate those hypotheses.
  • Establish structured resolution plans with project milestones and deadlines.
  • Lead and participate in prototype and test work to evaluate each hypothesis.
  • Ensure developed features can scale and support their industrial transfer, advising and supporting Production teams through industrialization.
  • Conduct literature reviews on technology topics and communicate findings through written materials and workshops.
  • Develop resolution paths for early-stage projects by assessing the time and risks associated with different approaches and identifying options that use minimal resources.

Desired Qualifications

  • Motivation to develop innovative, unconventional solutions and ability to test technology approaches quickly using a quick-and-dirty methodology.

About the Company

FAIRMAT

Closed-loop recycling of CFRP waste

Fairmat recycles carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) waste to close the loop in manufacturing. It takes end-of-life CFRP items, processes them into reusable carbon fiber materials, and supplies these recycled materials back to industries for new products, along with services like sustainability consulting. This is done through a closed-loop system that reduces landfill waste and lowers carbon footprints. The company differentiates itself by focusing on CFRP recycling at scale and partnering with major clients (e.g., Dassault Aviation, Decathlon, Siemens Gamesa, Siux) to cut raw material costs and boost sustainability credentials. The goal is to advance circular economy practices in heavy industries and enable decarbonization by turning waste into usable materials for new applications.
